Guest micromaniac
Hi, I'm new to linux but am desperately looking to get rid of windows. I have just installed mandrake 8.2 download version kernal: 2.4.18-6mdk. I've got a few items of hardware in the unknown devices list in harddrake. My graphics card : (ATI Radeon 7000 64Mb DDR) My Modem (conexant) and a few others that i cannot yet idenify. I'd like to get the modem going first as I have to keep going back to windows for internet access. I went to mandrake downloads and got myself on the conexant drivers page:- http://www.mbsi.ca/cnxtlindrv/modemident.html here I downloaded a modem identifying program to help with the driver the program gave this response:- ===================================================================== = SYSTEM INFORMATION = ===================================================================== Date : 10/29/2002 ListMdm Ver : 1.6 Windows OS : Microsoft Windows XP Build Number : 2600 ===================================================================== = RESULT OF MODEM QUERY = ===================================================================== NUMBER OF MODEMS FOUND = 1 MODEM #1: PCI CONFIGURATION INFORMATION READ: VENDOR ID : 14F1 DEVICE ID : 1085 SUBVENDOR ID : 14F1 SUBDEVICE ID : 1085 REVISION ID : 08 DEDUCED INFORMATION: VENDOR NAME : CONEXANT DEVICE NAME : CHECK CHIPSET FOR CORRECT MODEM SUBVENDOR NAME : ACTIONTEC, ZOLTRIX, ACEEX, TAICOM OR ASUS -- HTTP://WWW.ACTIONTEC.COM/, HTTP://WWW.TAICOM.COM, HTTP://WWW.ASUS.COM.TW/COMPANY/. FOR 14F1/ICH GO TO -- DELL-HTTP://SUPPORT.DELL.COM /US/EN/INDEX.ASP MODEM TYPE : Check chipset for correct drivers WINXP INBUILD SUPPORT : NO Press ENTER to continue... also on the page with this utility is a table to cross reference your modem from the vendor id indicates a conexant modem the device id is not in the list then I found some further information regarding identifying your modem from the chip on the card. I removed the card. Its a single chip modem with the following printed on the chip Conexant RH56D/SP-PCI R6795-11 E137347.1 according to the info this is definately a HCF type modem as the chip has R6795-XX on it. I then proceeded to :- http://www.mbsi.ca/cnxtlindrv/hcf/downloads.html where I downloaded the kernal specific HCF modem driver hcfpcimodem-0.98mbsibeta02101000k2.4.18_8.1mdk-1mdk.i586.rpm I installed this as instructed, still no modem is detected by the system. I have also tried the generic drivers for this modem, but no joy.. what do i have to do to configure the modem now i am this far in? Any help will be greatly appreciated. bvc
The utility did the same for me, but I have the hsf. I tried both, but lettting the hsfconfig program decide works for me. No matter what you do hardrake/ system is not going to recognize your modem, because it's a lin/winmodem bigtime. Hsfconfig/hcfconfig will creat a symlink to /dev/modem from ttySHSF0. If you're using kppp, choose /dev/modem. I've always had better results with wvdial (on the cd's), but know I have my own scripts that keep me connected evn better. With these 2 use /dev/ttySHSF0 or whatever hsfconfig/hcfconfig says when completing the install. Also there's a .pdf included in the rpm I think in the docs section.
