T0ken
Recently, KDE4 crashed on me so I've been setting up GNOME to use in it's absence. (you can view the thread for my KDE4 issue here: http://forum.mandriva.com/viewtopic.php?t=97989 and here: https://mandrivausers.org/index.php?showtopic=71984) I'm liking GNOME so far and my conversion to it has been ALMOST seamless. The only things I'm unable to find is the settings for changing the windows themes as well as power options (screen brightness, etc). Can anyone help me out? ianw1974
System --> Preferences --> Appearance to change the themes, etc. System --> Preferences --> Power Management for power options (battery). On my laptop I can control the screen brightness using the keys on the laptop fn and the brightness keys.
T0ken
Unfortunately, these are not listed in my System>Preferences (Appearance nor Power Mgmt.) I would assume this is because I was using KDE4.1 and then switched to Gnome? EDIT: ACTUALLY, I WENT TO THE PACKAGE MANAGER AND INSTALLED THE GNOME CONTROL CENTER AND I NOW HAVE THOSE OPTIONS. THANKS!!
T0ken
Hey, another issue that I'm having with GNOME. Even though I've changed the theme and the mouse pointer, the changes don't show on the title bar of each window. I've attached a picture below: The mouse pointer will only show it's theme when I'm actually using a specific window (for example, I can see the Oxygen themed mouse when the Firefox window is active). When I'm simply on the desktop, it still shows the original generic Mandriva themed mouse pointer.
Artificial Intelligence
AFAIK, you need to restart X before the cursor theme can take full effect, I'm not sure only changed cursor once and that have been 2 years ago.
T0ken
Thanks. I've done this (I've actually rebooted the machine) and the issue remains. That also would not explain the reason that title bars on my windows appears to be covered by something. Thanks for your reply though!

T0ken
try a different window border theme. there may be a problem with that theme. also, do you have the 3d desktop enabled? Yes I do. And I've discovered (with the help of the community @ forum.mandriva.com) that the 3d Desktop is what is causing this. When I disable 3d Desktop, Everything looks fine, but there are two things: I'd really like it to be enabled because (1) I love the cube effect (I'm a Linux n00b and Windows user for 10+ years), and (2) I use Cairo-dock, and apparently, without Compiz enabled I get an bad effect where when I pull up Cairo-dock it shows a black background instead of just showing whatever is behind it (see pic below) After running drak3d as root, I still get the same issue :( The output of 'cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf' is: # File generated by XFdrake (rev 247269) # ********************************************************************** # Refer to the xorg.conf man page for details about the format of # this file. # ********************************************************************** Section "ServerFlags" #DontZap # disable <Ctrl><Alt><BS> (server abort) #DontZoom # disable <Ctrl><Alt><KP_+>/<KP_-> (resolution switching) AllowMouseOpenFail # allows the server to start up even if the mouse does not work EndSection Section "Module" Disable "dri" Load "dbe" # Double-Buffering Extension Load "v4l" # Video for Linux Load "extmod" Load "type1" Load "freetype" Load "glx" # 3D layer EndSection Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Keyboard1" Driver "kbd" Option "XkbModel" "pc105" Option "XkbLayout" "us" Option "XkbOptions" "compose:rwin" EndSection Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Mouse1" Driver "mouse" Option "Protocol" "ExplorerPS/2" Option "Device" "/dev/mouse" EndSection Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Mouse2" Driver "evdev" Option "device" "/dev/input/by-id/usb-Logitech_USB_Receiver-event-mouse" Option "HWheelRelativeAxisButtons" "7 6" EndSection Section "InputDevice" Identifier "SynapticsMouse1" Driver "synaptics" Option "SHMConfig" "on" EndSection Section "Monitor" Identifier "monitor1" VendorName "Generic" ModelName "Flat Panel 1280x800" HorizSync 31.5-90 VertRefresh 60 Option "PreferredMode" "1440x900" # TV fullscreen mode or DVD fullscreen output. # 768x576 @ 79 Hz, 50 kHz hsync ModeLine "768x576" 50.00 768 832 846 1000 576 590 595 630 # 768x576 @ 100 Hz, 61.6 kHz hsync ModeLine "768x576" 63.07 768 800 960 1024 576 578 590 616 # modeline generated by gtf(1) [handled by XFdrake] ModeLine "1440x900_120" 229.75 1440 1552 1712 1984 900 901 904 965 -HSync +Vsync # modeline generated by gtf(1) [handled by XFdrake] ModeLine "1440x900_100" 187.55 1440 1544 1704 1968 900 901 904 953 -HSync +Vsync # modeline generated by gtf(1) [handled by XFdrake] ModeLine "1440x900_85" 156.79 1440 1536 1696 1952 900 901 904 945 -HSync +Vsync # modeline generated by gtf(1) [handled by XFdrake] ModeLine "1440x900_75" 136.49 1440 1536 1688 1936 900 901 904 940 -HSync +Vsync # modeline generated by gtf(1) [handled by XFdrake] ModeLine "1440x900_60" 106.47 1440 1520 1672 1904 900 901 904 932 -HSync +Vsync # modeline generated by gtf(1) [handled by XFdrake] ModeLine "1440x900_50" 87.41 1440 1512 1664 1888 900 901 904 926 -HSync +Vsync # modeline generated by gtf(1) [handled by XFdrake] ModeLine "1280x800_120" 181.21 1280 1376 1520 1760 800 801 804 858 -HSync +Vsync # modeline generated by gtf(1) [handled by XFdrake] ModeLine "1280x800_100" 147.89 1280 1376 1512 1744 800 801 804 848 -HSync +Vsync # modeline generated by gtf(1) [handled by XFdrake] ModeLine "1280x800_85" 123.38 1280 1368 1504 1728 800 801 804 840 -HSync +Vsync # modeline generated by gtf(1) [handled by XFdrake] ModeLine "1280x800_75" 107.21 1280 1360 1496 1712 800 801 804 835 -HSync +Vsync # modeline generated by gtf(1) [handled by XFdrake] ModeLine "1280x800_60" 83.46 1280 1344 1480 1680 800 801 804 828 -HSync +Vsync # modeline generated by gtf(1) [handled by XFdrake] ModeLine "1280x800_50" 68.56 1280 1336 1472 1664 800 801 804 824 -HSync +Vsync EndSection Section "Device" Identifier "device1" VendorName "nVidia Corporation" BoardName "NVIDIA GeForce 6100 and later" Driver "nvidia" Option "DPMS" Option "DynamicTwinView" "false" Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" EndSection Section "Screen" Identifier "screen1" Device "device1" Monitor "monitor1" DefaultColorDepth 24 Subsection "Display" Depth 8 Modes "1440x900" "1280x800" EndSubsection Subsection "Display" Depth 15 Modes "1440x900" "1280x800" EndSubsection Subsection "Display" Depth 16 Modes "1440x900" "1280x800" EndSubsection Subsection "Display" Depth 24 Modes "1440x900" "1280x800" EndSubsection EndSection Section "ServerLayout" Identifier "layout1" InputDevice "Keyboard1" "CoreKeyboard" InputDevice "Mouse1" "CorePointer" InputDevice "Mouse2" "SendCoreEvents" InputDevice "SynapticsMouse1" "SendCoreEvents" Screen "screen1" EndSection My hardware is a HP dv6810us. tyme
cairo-dock needs compiz to do the transparency, so that black bar is to be expected. as far as the source of the bar across your window borders, that sounds like a bug - not a configuration issue. there may not be much you can do except wait for an update  do you know what's drawing the window borders? is it emerald? you should use gnome-window-decorator while in GNOME. scoonma
[..]do you know what's drawing the window borders? is it emerald? you should use gnome-window-decorator while in GNOME. You do mean /usr/bin/gtk-window-decorator, correct? (as found in package compiz-decorator-gtk)
