scarecrow
hd rips are quite demanding, hardware-wise, especially the 1080p ones. You shouldn't expect much with old hardware. Anyway: The best FREE solution for watching hd x264 rips is the new VLC 0.9.X, preferrably with a fairly recent x264 package (from git or wherever). The best overall solution (but commercial) is injecting the windows codec CoreAVC to mplayer. http://code.google.com/p/coreavc-for-linux/ You can compare to the vlc playback, and judge if it's worth the $15 the licence costs.
