Can i use a Swap partition for two installs

Recommended Posts

I'm going to be starting a Linux From Scratch install soon. For a while i'll be running LFS and Mandrake alongside. Do need to make another swap partition for LFS or will it use my existing one ?

no wonder tyme's got 1633 posts... :P

you're off-topic! :-P

anyways. that's the only time i've ever done that (repeated what someone else said). well, maybe not...

and, just so I stay on topic (and actually make a useful post):

The reason you can use the same swap space for different installs is because swap, like RAM, is only used during that session. That is, when you shut down, the information in the swap is no longer useful. it's the same for the pagefile in windows. one thing I don't know for sure is if Linux cleans the swap before a shutdown (I would assume that it does)...I know you can make Windows do this-and it takes for FREAKIN' ever-because all the systems where I work are required to do it. security measures :-).

you could use a shared /boot

I would name my kernels accordingly

/boot/bzImage-Mandrake9.1

/boot/bzImage-gentoo

/boot/pauls_OS

etc etc

Hi

will it affect the distros that i will install in the machine?

No,

anyway not for me when mandrake still "owned" /boot partition(lilo)

for mdk8.2 + 2 gentoo versions.

Finally got fed up booting mdk to lilo install new gentoo kernel.

Installed grub(slick fb) in gentoo, now taking over mdk /boot partition.

(some planing from me required for switch...)

0 problems booting mdk(symlinks pointed to correct...)

or gentoo. (mdk now gone from this machine)

Have 0 direct knowledge about other distros I dont know zip about

but would not be afraid to try since whatever "loads" a distro

will load it's kernel et all according to it's particular configuration

in /etc/lilo.conf, /boot/grub.conf or whatever.

HIH
