2008.1 uses pulseaudio. I experienced (and still am to some extent) problems with my fresh installation as well. I got sound from system sounds (e.g. start-up sound), but no sound with some games (it worked for maniadrive, but not for Quake4) and no sound with amarok.

I installed pulseaudio controls (or whatever that name was - I'm currently at the office; not home) from MCC. My problem seems to be that I have a USB phone connected and PulseAudio thinks that's No. 1 playback device.

Even after the installation of the pulseaudio controls I had to open it and let the sound play. Then go into the pulseaudio controls, choose playback and with a right click make my desktop loudspeakers the default playback device for that particular source... I have to do this to any and all new sources...

According to this bug report: Bug #39772

You can disable pulseaudio and just use alsa for a temporary fix.

Please add any additional info you have to the bug report, so the devs can fix this.

@ orts- It appears you have a similar problem at kernel level. I would suggest that you also disable pulseaudio and just try alsa... but that may not work for you?

Please add any additional info you have to this bug report: Bug #40392

Thanks

I don't use Pulse, this is just from memory of some stuff I have read, I have read that you need to adjust the volume in 2 different locations, in kmix (or equivalent) and from within Pulse's settings thingy whatever, this is just what I read, so it may or may not be correct.

My first experience with Pulse Audio (in RC2), was that it gave me low, thin sound, I didn't have the time or desire to mess around and see if I could get it to my liking, so I just disabled it, and haven't looked back. Beautiful full sounding music and games, no messing about, it just works.
