Guest Andromea Posted May 30, 2003 Report Share Posted May 30, 2003 Hi I recently made the switch from winXP to Mandrake LInux. And I like it very much. Everything is working perfectly, execept for my graphics card. The screen is a litlle shifted to the right and my tv-out doen work at all. So I updated my Drivers to the ones from Nvidia: NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4363. Everything went ok with that. But then you need to adjust the XF86Config-4 file. And that's when the problems arise. In the config file you must change in the section "Device", Driver "nv" to Driver "nvidia". But when I do that the Xserver won't boot anymore. It will give me an error saying that there is no screen detected or there is no screen with usable settings. Did I do something wrong or did I forget something? That's because I switched it back to it original setting, "nv", to get X working. But the error message about the screen not found doesn't show up anymore. Wich I totaly don't understand. But X still won't boot, it loads until I see a blue screen with the mouse pointer (a black X) on it (wich works). So now I think the problem isn't the nvidia driver but something else. Because when I startup in GUI and try to go to text mode with Ctrl+Alt+Backspace the sreen just turns black. And then nothing happens and I have to turn off my computer. And when I startup in text mode and try to start X it only turns to a blue screen. And returning to the text mode doesn't work anymore either, that worked the first time I tried it. DragonMage Posted May 30, 2003 Report Share Posted May 30, 2003 You know.. I have a similar problem with nvidia driver not wanting to boot up X in my epox nforce2 mb. It seems that the nvidia driver doesn't like to be put into IRQ greater than 10. You may need to juggle around your irq (going to bios and reserve some irqs and booting up, checking whether the video card takes irq greater than 10 or not during POST). Try it, maybe it works. avadis Posted May 30, 2003 Report Share Posted May 30, 2003 Dear Sir/Madam, To use the NVıdıa driver, you must also load the NVIDIA kernel. Does your /etc/modules.conf file have the stanza that does it? Otherwise please read the README that comes with the NVidia driver package and add the appropriate line to the file. I do not remember what the line is except for a major device number of 195 for my old TNT 2, since I upgraded to an ATI card. Perhaps in the new driver, this number is different. SDincerely, A. Try to choose something...anything close to your monitors specs.
