Guest archerodis
My just installed Mdk 9.1 (aka bamboo) works just fine except that it refuses to reboot or shutdown properly. It seems to go through the reboot/shutdown procedure ok (i.e., there isn't any file system corruption) but doesn't actually reboot/shutdown. I have a dual athlon tyan board and I'm dual booting with XP. Can anyone offer any advice? chris
mtweidmann
Could you have a look in "/var/log/boot.log". Its a log file that records the output when you boot and shutdown. So try and find the section the refers to your last shutdwon and post the interesting bits here.

I have left only the most recent of the repeating errors. --The 'video' error on may9 was a one off. I must have corrected this after configuring XFree. --The 'loadkeys' error happens on and off but have no real problems there. The man pages look a bit wierd but are readable. --Stopping the display manager happens on and off. Sometimes I can ask the machine to shutdown while still logged in and sometimes I cannot. I'm instead taken to the login-screen and can shhutdown from there. When that happens this is when I get this particular error message. --I think the USB error started after I configured my printer even though it works fine. Don't know why it mentions USB filesystems, I haven't got any storage devices on USB. --In my previous post I mentioned that I didn't have any filesystem corruption. This is a one off. My system hanged when I was compiling a new kernel. I haven't changed anything yet, the crash happened during compilation. --The last error shows how little I know. I don't know how to set the hostname properly. I have some unusual logs in dmesg as well but we'll leave those for another time unless you think they are relevant. thanks
pmpatrick
What is your graphics card? There's a bug in the new XFree for certain ATI Radeons that cause these types of shutdown errors.
Guest archerodis
I have a GeForce2MX 200. Setup has detected it as NVIDIA GeForce2 DDR (generic). It looked OK from the start except that the display was slightly off-centre but I ccrrected that using a Modeline generated by xvidtune. I haven't installed nVidia's own drivers yet. Do you think I should?
pmpatrick
Your having trouble shutting down your display manager. By default the dm used is mdkKDM which I've found to be pretty bugy. Try changing the dm in Mandrake Control Center>Hardware>Display manager chooser. Select either KDM or GDM and see if it makes any difference. Guest archerodis
I have changed to GDM. There has been no change; what I mean is, my original problem regarding shutdown/reboot is still there whether the dm is shutdown properly or not. bvc
After changing the dm, do you still get the same errors in the logs? Could be an APM/ACPI prob...which one does your sys use?
Gowator
Kill your dm manually with a kill -9 then init 3 (I'm taking you know how to ps -ef and git the pid. If not just ask) then try a reboot from RL 3 IF this works you know its something in the graphical interface.
tyme
come on guys, you forgot the first suggestion with 9.1! make sure you have all the updates, because there are a TON of them...(of course, this still may not fix it, but keeping your system up-to-date is always important...especially when something isn't working right)
iphitus
I get that DM error sometimes, it just happens sometimes, it's probably not the source of the problem. What happens? does the screen go blank, does it keep the graphical command line? does it seem to freeze, is there no response? James
Guest archerodis
folks thank for your help so far. I don't think it's the dm(I can kill the dm by doing telinit 3). I think it has to do with that ACPI/APM business. I think i've got ACPI. Its the more modern of the two right? The question now is how to change to APM. Do I have to do a kernel recompile and leave out the ACPI?
bvc
put acpi=off in your booloader config for ML9.1. If you use lilo here's mine to help you know what to look for append="devfs=mount hdd=ide-scsi acpi=on" of course change yours to off. The way it works is the kernel uses the first it finds. Look in /var/log/messages. By passing acpi=off to the kernel at boot apm should be used.
