Loaded Mandriva 2008 from magazine onto old computer second drive. Installed ok except when ids and passwords asked for the keybooard inserted strange symbols. now i cannot get in.

tried reinstalling several times but no change and last installs give no option to reenter the data.

Is there any way of getting behind the scenes to correct the user id and password. Admiistration passwordmay also be dud.

I cannot reformat the drive from windows as its no longer seen by windows.

Any suggestions please

If it is a new system with no viable data, then simply perform the entire install again, including formatting the Linux partitions.

To get into a Linux system, you need live cd. Boot with the live cd, mount your partition, and edit /etc/password. Look for the line with "root' in it and zero the password section in the middle of the line.

Alt+Ctrl+F1 will get you to a console (you need to have root access to make system changes or to add users), from there just type root press enter the input root password press enter. If successful type drakconf press enter.

It is also possible that the magazine DVD is corrupted or the magazine has made some changes of its own. (Some are known to do this in a facade at pretending to be offering a chance to discover Linux but really to deter potential users. The magazines make big money from Microsoft Advertising and none from Linux, so don't be surprised. Of course they deny that as you would expect they would)

That would explain why you got the same result from repeated reinstall attempts. If you can, download an iso of Mandriva2008-Free and burn your own DVD copy.

Cheers. John.

If you have strange symbols, then I would say that the keyboard was configured incorrectly when it was installed perhaps. Try a clean install, choosing the correct layout - the installer can reformat the Linux based partitions.
