ianw1974
You add this to /etc/modprobe.conf in Mandriva. The alsa-base is for Debian based distros, which is why it probably didn't work for you.
CastrTroy
As far as the problems with the sound go, here's what works with my laptop (Acer 3680). Open up KMixer, and the Headphones and speakers are actually 2 separate outputs. So, you can enable all the outputs, and then you should hear sound, from both the speakers and the headphones. Then disable them one-by-one until speakers/headphones turn off. For me the speakers are hooked into 3D Surround, while the headphones are hooked to the front channel. It seems that the audio drivers are broken, such that it doesn't sense when headphones are plugged in, and disable/enable the appropriate sound channel.
