JediSB
Is there any way to make the fonts in Mandrake 9 look as good as they do in Red Hat 8? If so, how? (Coming from a new Linux user.) Thanks in advance! Scott
Guest arise
Come on you Mandrake fans, help the poor guy here....should we tell him what XFT2 and Freefonts are? :D
JediSB
It seems I read an article somewhere about RH8 that mentioned fontconfig and xft2. The PLF mirrors have the following: freetype2-2.0.9-3plf.i586.rpm However, Texstar's FTP site has freetype2-2.1.2-2tex.i586.rpm (which appears to be a newer version) and also has: xft-2.0-1tex.i586.rpm fontconfig-2.0-1tex.i586.rpm Do I just need FreeType2 or will I need the other stuff as well? Which version of FreeType2 should I use? 2.0.9 or 2.1.2? Will I have to do any sort of configuring at all, or will it just work once it is installed? Thanks in advance again. JediSB
I think I just got all of my questions answered here: http://elektron.its.tudelft.nl/~rbos36/mdk...kfreetype2.html
MoonChild
Trying it now... I hope it works as promised :) It looks cool! Hope plf is doing it well... I got the 2-2.0.9 version
ral
I am lost...went ot the page(Fretype 2) but the packages there are for Mandrake 8.1 and 8.2. What do I use for Mandrake 9? Or does Mandrake 9 already have the better looking fonts?
JediSB
If you got to Texstar's FTP he has these packages for MDK9.
bvc
I got freetype2-2.0.9-3plf.i586.rpm (and devel) from http://plf.zarb.org/and it's working well. I tried to get Xft from there as well but urpmi said The following packages contain Xft: XFree86-libs pango libpango1.0_0 :?: Does this go with what this link above says? http://elektron.its.tudelft.nl/~rbos36/mdk...kfreetype2.htmlLast updated 10 october 2002. Note (10 october 2002): Mandrake 9.0 does not have the bytecode interpreter enabled by default. Please excuse me for the wrong information. Note: Mandrake 9.0 does not need a patched freetype2 RPM, because the bytecode interpreter is enabled by default in this distribution. So how are people getting Xft??? ral
Guys? Help? Not sure if my font's already improve and I did not notice or am I missing a step?
bvc
The change for me wasn't as noticable as the link above shows. But, like I posted above, I didn't get the Xft pkgs installed either. I did notice a diff but it wasn't a big diff. I'm happy with the results. What wm are you using kde, gnome, other.....? Because kde looked nice to begin with so there really wasn't a diff in kde for me. Gnome had the most improvement. MoonChild how'd it work for you? Guest MArk
xft2 is a big upgrade and need patched pango for gnome and qt for kde - not for the faint of heart.
JediSB
I got xft2 RPMs from the Texstar FTP site. You need to make sure that the font you are using for your menus, etc. is a true type font. (I'm using Tahoma for everything, which I grabbed from my Windows partition. It is what Win2K and WinXP use for menus, etc.) I also turned off anti-aliasing for fonts sized 8 through 14. (I think that tweak was on one of the pages I posted above.)
