what's current for installing nvidia binaries?

Help! Could someone clarify the current way of installing the special binary drivers for the video cards:

There are so many 'nvidia'-related packages, and I can't find out where to see what they all do.

There is a howto about nvidia binaries ( https://mandrivausers.org/index.php?showtopic=4567 ), it seems to have been written quite a long time ago. Is it all still current, or is it for doing something that the newer packages now also do?

(I think I might have by far too many nvidia packages installed, but can't see how to thin it all out.)

Thanks in advance

Terry

... and a package called kernel-source-stripped. There are many version of that too but you have to install the one which matches to your running kernel. So in a command line issue "uname -a" without quotes. It will write something like

Linux localhost 2.6.17-13mdv #1 SMP Fri Mar 23 19:03:31 UTC 2007 i686 AMD Sempron 2800+ GNU/Linux
The number in bold is what you need.

dexter: installing dkms-nvidia will pull in kernel-source etc as dependencies.

ian: full instructions: first, follow the instructions at http://wiki.mandriva.com/en/Docs/Basic_tas...tions_available to ensure you have the necessary repositories configured. Then install the nvidia and dkms-nvidia packages. Then follow these instructions: http://wiki.mandriva.com/en/Releases/Mandr...ion_not_working (they're written for a different problem, as you can see, but they actually apply to your situation). If you're asked whether to use proprietary or free drivers, obviously, pick proprietary.
