Hi,

I have a wireless lan card avaliable in my dell inspiron 1501 laptop. The problem with that is I am not able to search for available wireless networks in the range.

But, If i know the essid and key, I am able to connect to wireless internet using the IWCONFIG and DHCLIENT commands.

But for this I have to know the essid.

How do I search for available wireless networks in a particular region?

Be sure that you have the wireless tools installed. This should give you a gui and tray icons. You should be able to see them in MCC under "manage wireless networks". Again, scanned networks should appear whether you are connected or not.

Thank you. I have wireless tools installed in my system.

[root@localhost rar]# urpmi wireless-tools
unable to access hdlist file of "update_source", medium ignored
The package(s) are already installed

When i connect using IWCONFIG command, internet is getting connected properly and a "signal bars" like "||||" but in increasing order of size appear in the tray.

But when I right click that and go to manage wireless networks menu, It says "No device found"

Please have a look at the screenshot for more details.

Unfortunately, I have found that when this happens, I needed to set up the wireless device again. Once you go through the motions of configuring the card, it will then work. But, before you do this, you might want to look in the tray and make sure you are looking at the wireless nic and not the regular nic. I have set it on auto before but had to switch it to specifically look only at the wireless in order to make the connection. The odd thing is that if the card were not working, you would not be able to see the network signal!
