so far:

mail: Sylpheed (faaaaaaaaast)

browser: Skipstone (faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaasst)

edit: gnotepad (faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaass)

filer: ROX (faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaast)

of course aterm, duh, everone knows that one.

not to present myself as l33t or anything, I just like to try different things.

oh, and of course the underdog in the WM heirarchy, Pekwm

anyone else like to break out of the KDE or Gnome mould and try to improve?

Post your choices and thoughts.

Sounds good. But I'd hardly say Pekwm is an underdog. Something like ratpoison might be considered such though :)

Well, I'm KDE free since mdk 7.2 or 8.0 and I haven't use Gnome in a year, though some of my sisters still using it. :D

mail: mutt (fast, powerful, incredible....)

browser: Opera and lynx

edit: vim (anyother editor will fall in comparation, is a fact)

filer: bash (but I'm thinking in a zsh migration)

wm: fluxbox

can't argue with that!

browser: Opera and lynx

Opera...well it's fast, but it didn't take gtk themes properly. lynx is the winner hands down for speed

edit: vim (anyother editor will fall in comparation, is a fact)

I don't do any coding to justify vim, but you are right for speed and sheer power, Vim is a magicians spellbook.

filer: bash (but I'm thinking in a zsh migration)

what is zsh?

wm: fluxbox

come over to Pekwm, all the features of Flux and eyecandy, since you are obviously into that

Well, it's been a long time since I stopped using anything but blackbox. Of course, I had to tweak everything else to make it look uniform, but the results are great.

mail: sylpheed

browse: opera

messenger: gnome-icu or gaim

filer: mc or gnome-commander.

editor: gvim

in the terminal I love pico, same as nano i guess.

I wanna try mutt, I'd love to read my mail in a transparent term (I'm such a trend whore), but Sylpheed gives me easily configurable filters, folders, etc.

Anyone use Pine for mail. Supposed to be pretty good.

what is zsh?

Is the Z shell.

I've done little incursions into it, and I liked a lot. Is by far more complex and feature rich than bash, which makes me feel that I'll love it.

To test it type: "zsh --login" and have fun!

I'll try it :D

the developer is a really nice funny helpful guy too.

not me. Pine is for people that are afraid of computers

Nano is ok, but I only included it to be honest, since I do use it sometimes, it's certainly not my favorite.

I know some pretty heavy duty people who would take exception to that comment. I don't really know myself. Any reason you say that, besides liking to cause trouble (like me  )

it's pretty light weight, I would never use it other than for very simple command line editing (sidenote, see this thread, really improves text mode useability)

Nah, mutt is just much more powerful than pine, that's all - mutt is to pine as vim is to pico

heh heh you said "791" (in the other thread)

I only find that humorous because I'm watching a Lexx DVD right now and one of the characters is "790" - the episode is "791" where 790, the robot head gets a body and wants to do it with Zev (I'm easily amused)
