Can't load partition on RAID after installation

Hello

I'm planning switching to Linux from Windows and chose Mandriva 2007 Free to be my new OS.

I have an ASUS A8V Deluxe motherboard with VIA VT8237 which provides RAID funcionality on SATA drives.

During installation process the installer recognizes my RAID setup and asks me if I want to enable it. I answer yes and the partition is available to even install on it. I choose anohter partition on an ATA HDD.

Everything goes fine but my problem occurs after successful installation.

The partition is not mounted and cannot be mounted.

/etc/fstab refers to /dev/mapper/via_dhgdggdbbd5. When I look into /dev/mapper there is only one file: control

When I use Knoppix the RAID is recognized and the partition is mounted normally.

Any hint about things to do would be much appreciated

Thanks for the reply Ixthusdan

The system sees both RAID HDDs as seperate ones and they are unmounted (this is normal sisnce fstab doesn't mount them seperately)

When installing Mandriva I was presented with w single RAID HDD after is discovered that I'm using it and asekd if I want to enable RAID.

SATA RAID controller is present in the system.

We did the same here. We have two HDD mirrored using a ASROCK motherboard

THe things we did.

Set up raid first Do a full reboot, (the Raid has to set it self up on boot.)

Then start the install, install notices raid and asks, SAY yes.

Next install it all.

After double check where it is trying to install the grub or lilo.

Then you shoud be ok.

In our case it was trying to install the Grub on my USB Drive, (Where i have the installers.)

Thanks for the tip, michaelcole.

Does it mean that I have to install a software RAID?

Could you help me with some specyfic commands?

How do I install RAID? Won't I loose data already on RAID partitions?

Ours were all blank..

But the question from mandi is "should it use the RAID as setup and use the software driver to talk to the RAID setup" Still using the hardware BIOS raid..

Once you are past that question it asks about the partitions there you can specify what you want to do, we selected the bottom option "advanced or custom" not sure what it is but it gives you a display of what partitions you have and what you can do with them.

IF YOU HAVE PARTITIONS IT WILL SHOW THEM THERE...

We split ours 250GB into

100GB /home/

30GB for /var/www

40GB for /

4 GB for swap

50 GB for our RSYNC directory (we rsync external mandy site for easy and quick installs internally)

30 GB for /var/ this allows for logs to build up and not disrupt other functions

Up to personal preferences for the patitions.

Software raid can be configured on an existing system, or it can even be configured before installation.

However, if you are using raid for a hardware raid controller, then it has to be set up before you install the operating system.

EDIT:

Installing software raid mirror - RAID1:

https://mandrivausers.org/index.php?showtop...l=software+raid

Converting existing system raid mirror - RAID1:

https://mandrivausers.org/index.php?showtop...l=software+raid

the first exists on my website as well. The second will exist on my website over the next few days when I get it updated. They both work for me, which is why I wrote them :P

Thanks for all the help.

I discovered that all it takes is a simple dmraid -ay to be able activate the array and mount /dev/mapper/via_dhgdggdbbd5

It seems that dmraid is never activated when booting.

How can I activate it automatically every boot to be available before /etc/fstab is processed?
