Glennzo
Mandriva Free 2007 has been one of the easier distros to install and configure. A huge surprise is the 3D desktop effects. I fought for a week to get desktop effects working in Fedora Core 6. I won, but it's not 100%. On the flip side, a few (6-7) mouse clicks in Mandriva control panel and away we go! 3D effects works flawlessly and it's really neat! I have an NVidia GeForce FX5200. Any comments or thoughts on the following output from glxgears as run from a terminal with XMMS and SuperKaramba running? [glenn@dhcppc2 ~]$ glxgears 6988 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1397.030 FPS 10500 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2087.487 FPS 10500 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2086.238 FPS 10574 frames in 5.1 seconds = 2092.082 FPS 10360 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2066.915 FPS 10500 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2093.961 FPS 10387 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2069.833 FPS 10360 frames in 5.1 seconds = 2049.590 FPS 10500 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2082.992 FPS 10387 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2071.198 FPS 9380 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1860.729 FPS 10500 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2093.071 FPS 10527 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2090.727 FPS 10080 frames in 5.1 seconds = 1986.646 FPS [glenn@dhcppc2 ~]$
tyme
glxgears is actually not a good tool for performance spec'ing. it's really only intended to ensure glx is actually working, not so much to measure it's perfomance. that being said, your reports look good. Some people get really low scores, some really really high (hence the suggested non-reliance as a performance measure) but the range yours are in is a pretty standard range - especially for your card. After I posted those results I booted FC6 and ran glxgears. I got about half the performance there that I got in Mandriva. Makes me wonder what the difference is. Maybe the fact that I use KDE for Mandriva and Gnome for Fedora. Anyhow, just what is considered the better/best tool for testing video performance? ianw1974
A nice command to check if direct-rendering is working: glxinfo | grep direct and it should report "yes".

ianw1974
Should be OK then. The best thing you can do is play a game, that is the only real way to get a good test of your opengl performance, since glxgears isn't a great way to do it. At least, from recommendations I've read in the past.
daniewicz
Glennzo: This will give some perspective to your scores. My NVIDIA GeForce2 on Mandriva 2005 gives a value of 859.
ianw1974
I got comparable results with Fedora Core 5 and Mandriva 2006/2007 of about 4400fps with my Nvidia Geforce TI 4400 128MB AGP card.
scarecrow
glxgears is absolutely unreliable. Just minimize the gear window, and the framerate will likely go over 1,500. Now run an OpenGL screensaver, and right after that glxgears again. You'll be lucky if you get 150 fps... :D Now working with a 7600GS 256MB card, which gets some 8,600 fps normally and almost 14,000 fps with the gear window minimized. ianw1974
About the same that I've managed to get on any of my Intel cards in my laptops. No more than 550fps from what I've seen. Both for my laptop and desktop system, and they have 64MB versus 128MB - same results from glxgears.

papaschtroumpf
I cannot belive you think 2007 is hte easiest distro to install. I have had nothing but trouble since I started, nad I have installed mutliple version of mandrake to date. glxgears doesn't even seem to be installed nor does urpmi know anything about.
