Mount CDROM [solved]

I tried to mount my cdrom, but I cann't.

I installed mandriva 2006 x64.

I have /mnt/cdrom I checked also fstab. There is written that /dev/hda -> /mnt/cdrom.

When I ckecked for /dev/hda i saw that i do not nave a hda file.

When I try to mount it i recieve an error: special device /dev/hda does not exist.

What should I do?

Hi Velichko,

an easy way would be using harddrake from MCC (Mandrake Control Center) to try getting /dev/hda built automatically. If that does not work, you could use the "makedev" command (see "man makedev").

When my OS boot i recieve a message "/dev/dvd block device", but I install Mandriva with the sane CD device.

Here is my fstab:

I can not read any data from my dvd-rom.When I tried to isstalled some services I couldn't, because I can not access my cd/dvd.

When I pass this command "ls -l /dev/hda" I recieve the following mesage: /dev/hda no such file or directory Sad

Can somebody help me guys?

Hm. Your fstab entry looks quite okay. If your hda device is not in /dev, you could insert it manually by the following (assumed your CD-ROM is the same physical device as your DVD reader, right?), after opening a shell window.

su [;then enter root password]
makedev /dev hda
cd /dev
ln -s /dev/hda /dev/dvd
ln -s /dev/hda /dev/dvd0
exit

Please check if this works and if not, which error messages are generated?

Thank you for your help!

I alredy execute this command. When I executed them I did not recieve any error, but my CDROM still not working.

I create a /dev/hda with makedev /dev hda, and the other command are executed properly(without errors).

During reboot the computer I get the same error. After restarting the computer I saw taht I do not have a /dev/hda which I alredy created(before restarting). When I start the machine again I execute them again in order to mount my cdrom. I execute the commands that you refer me(without errors) again, but when I tried to execute "mount /dev/hda /mnt/cdrom" I get a error "mount: /dev/hda is not a valid block device".

I ma realy confused what happen ???.

Do you have some other idea?

Hm. Are you sure the hardware is ok? You could check by booting some Live CD.

Yes, the hardware is OK, I install Mandriva 2006 from the same DVD-ROM.

What kernel are you using? Did you manually install your own kernel? I get this same error if I try to compile and use my own kernel in 2006 32 bit version.

Hi,

I used kernel 2.6.12-12mdk x64, but I did not manualy install it. I download mandriva 2006 and install it.

A also check for driver for my DVD-ROM ASUS E616, but I found for Win only :(.

I lould like to check if I change the kernel version, nut I am quite new in linux and I do not know how can I do that.

Are you think that this will fix the issue?

Maybe, have you got your easyurpmi sources set up? Visit the easyurpmi link at the top of this page. Choose 2006 and also make sure you choose x64 if you have 64 bit version installed.

Set up for main, contrib, updates, plf-free and plf-nonfree. Then apply all updates to your system.

Once, you've done this, install the new kernel manually. I don't use 64 bit, but presume the kernel will be similar. Post the output of this command, so I can see what is available and let you know which is best to install:

urpmf --name kernel

and we can choose a new one for you. It might sort the problem, we shall see.
