Samba/VNC with Win2000 Pro ... at my wits' end

I just installed Win2000 pro on my fiancee's computer. We had Samba working on Win98SE, but now it doesn't. I checked that her username in net config is the samba username and the password is correct. I've got Samba set up to use encrypted passwords. The deal is DHCP works fine, but when I go into My Network Places on Win2000, it doesn't even show the mdkgroup (well, at one point I had it showing, but don't know what change lost it). When it was showing, clicking on it took a long time and then 'The network is not accessible'. I cannot ping the MDK box from Windows. It says 'timed out'..

Here's my smb.conf:

# Samba config file created using SWAT

# from localhost.localdomain (127.0.0.1)

# Date: 2003/01/21 15:25:03

# Global parameters

print command = lpr-cups -P %p -o raw %s -r   # using client side printer drivers.

Why does DHCP work and not Samba?

This is what I get when I try to browse her computer:

GetSMBShare:smbclient -L 6v0k10b -I 192.168.0.2 -U% -W MDKGROUP -d3

added interface ip=192.168.0.1 bcast=192.168.0.255 nmask=255.255.255.0

Client started (version 2.2.1a).

Connecting to 192.168.0.2 at port 139

Domain=[MDKGROUP] OS=[Windows 5.0] Server=[Windows 2000 LAN Manager]

There has got to be someone that has an idea. I can now browse the Windows shares from Linux (dumb mistake when I defined the shares), but still get the 'Path to host is unknown' from Windows to Linux. I know it's probably a Windows problem and that's probably why no one has answered, because I'm using the same /etc/samba/smb.conf file that I used before we upgraded to Win2K.

Ok, I found this site that said I need to run WINS on the 2000 box and not Linux, which I did. Also, that I needed to make 2000 the domain master by editing the registry in 3 places, which I also did. I edited my smb.conf to reflect those changes. Still the same problems. 'Network path was not found'. There has got to be someone that has Samba working with 2000 and Linux that can give me some tips.

Thanks. I also forgot to say Mandrake 8.1. The funny thing is when I see my box's name on My Network Places, it says off to the left where windows puts the description 'Samba Server 2.2.(whatever)', so how can it see that and not access the shares???? 'Path to Host Unknown'.....bwahahahahahahahahahaha<hack>....*cough*.....hahahahaha

I have run into something very simmilar to what you are going through, and wondering if you have turned the local master to "NO" inf SAMBA GLOBAL VARIABLES. I have left the domain master as AUTO but I can brows both ways (2000 to linux or linux to 2000).

Hope this helps out.
