RVDowning
Hi All. I seem to be having a webcam problem. It seems to recoginize that it is there but I'm getting some kind of error message. dmesg info follows from after booting this morning: ohci_hcd 0000:00:02.1: wakeup usb 2-1: new full speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 2 Linux video capture interface: v1.00 3rdparty/ov511/ov511_core.c: USB OV511+ video device found 3rdparty/ov511/ov511_core.c: model: Creative Labs WebCam 3 (id=21) SCSI subsystem initialized libata version 1.11 loaded. sata_nv version 0.6 ACPI: PCI Interrupt Link [APSJ] enabled at IRQ 22 ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:00:0a.0[A] -> Link [APSJ] -> GSI 22 (level, high) -> IRQ 22 PCI: Setting latency timer of device 0000:00:0a.0 to 64 ata1: SATA max UDMA/133 cmd 0x9F0 ctl 0xBF2 bmdma 0xC400 irq 22 ata2: SATA max UDMA/133 cmd 0x970 ctl 0xB72 bmdma 0xC408 irq 22 3rdparty/ov511/ov511_core.c: Device at usb-0000:00:02.1-1 registered to minor 0 usbcore: registered new driver ov511 3rdparty/ov511/ov511_core.c: v2.28 : ov511 USB Camera Driver (V4L2 disabled) kobject_register failed for ov511 (-17) [<c0103f3e>] dump_stack+0x1e/0x20 [<c021d40b>] kobject_register+0x6b/0x80 [<c028bcf1>] bus_add_driver+0x71/0xd0 [<f8dde180>] usb_register+0x60/0xd0 [usbcore] [<f8dc2013>] usb_ov511_init+0x13/0x36 [ov511] [<c018f123>] sys_init_module+0xe3/0x270 [<c0102fef>] sysenter_past_esp+0x54/0x75 usbcore: error -17 registering driver ov511 I would appreciate any suggestions. Ixthusdan
See if this site helps any. Creative claims it will work but has no other information since webcam 3 is an archived model.
RVDowning
Thanks for the response. I checked out the site but don't think it is going to be of much help to me. I also have a 3com HomeConnect PC Digital Webcam, but it looks like that one requires a kernel recompile -- definitely over my head. (Better to live without a webcam than to break my system entirely!) Neither of my other 2 webcams works either. So far I've tried 4 different webcams. I guess if I keep buying enough of them I'll eventually find one that will work with Linux. Thanks again!
Ixthusdan
Well, creative claims all of their new models work with linux. I don't have any experience witrh it, so I don't have any other insight. Does Harddrake still see it? Have you tried plugging it in after boot? RVDowning
I have tried plugging it in after the system was already up. The message log shows essentially the same thing that I posted above, so it does seem that harddrake sees it. One thing that I didn't mention is that the webcam's green led light does come on, and stays on.
RVDowning
I see a thread from 02/08/2005 indicating the exact same problem at: http://www.zoneminder.com/forums/viewtopic...7f191a37c6b224a Not sure what release they were running, 10.1 or LE2005, but it seems the fix involved downgrading something. Either driver or kernel -- I'm not sure.
scarecrow
An idea that might help (might not, as well) is adding at your /etc/fstab something like: usbfs /proc/bus/usb usbfs defaults 0 0 Actually, this solves problems with several kinds of USB devices, while in theory it would be rather pointless. The camera seems to be working ( http://www.qbik.ch/usb/devices/showdevcat....amp;s=v&d=a ) under Linux, although it's a very old model... Also- take a look here: http://alpha.dyndns.org/ov511/ Edited July 13, 2006 by scarecrow
RVDowning
Well, I tried following the instructions at http://alpha.dyndns.org/ov511/install.html but had problems.: On step 4, "modprobe ov511" I get the following: "FATAL: Error inserting ov511 (/lib/modules/2.6.12-22mdk/kernel/drivers/usb/media/ov511.ko): No such device" and this causes the same dmesg that I see on boot. However that file is there, so I don't understand what it doesn't like -- permissions?? Doesn't seem likely. By the way, having done before that (per those same instructions) a "modprobe ohci-hcd", it just causes the original error message to be listed twice when I boot. kobject_register failed for ov511 (-17) [<c0103f3e>] dump_stack+0x1e/0x20 [<c021d40b>] kobject_register+0x6b/0x80 [<c028bcf1>] bus_add_driver+0x71/0xd0 [<f8dde180>] usb_register+0x60/0xd0 [usbcore] [<f8d16054>] usb_ov511_init+0x54/0x9c [ov511] [<c018f123>] sys_init_module+0xe3/0x270 [<c0102fef>] sysenter_past_esp+0x54/0x75 usbcore: error -17 registering driver ov511 kobject_register failed for ov511 (-17) [<c0103f3e>] dump_stack+0x1e/0x20 [<c021d40b>] kobject_register+0x6b/0x80 [<c028bcf1>] bus_add_driver+0x71/0xd0 [<f8dde180>] usb_register+0x60/0xd0 [usbcore] [<f8d16054>] usb_ov511_init+0x54/0x9c [ov511] [<c018f123>] sys_init_module+0xe3/0x270 [<c0102fef>] sysenter_past_esp+0x54/0x75 usbcore: error -17 registering driver ov511 So, now every time I boot I get the error sequence twice. Is it time to restore from backups? Well, I had 4 webcams, gave one away, one requires a kernel rebuild, so I thought I would try the Logitech. So, I unplugged this webcam, and stuck in a Logitech which causes dmesg to show: ohci_hcd 0000:00:02.1: wakeup usb 2-1: new full speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 3 usbaudio: device 3 audiocontrol interface 1 has 1 input and 0 output AudioStreaming interfaces usbaudio: valid input sample rate 8000 usbaudio: device 3 interface 2 altsetting 1: format 0x00000010 sratelo 8000 sratehi 8000 attributes 0x0 0 usbaudio: valid input sample rate 16000 usbaudio: device 3 interface 2 altsetting 2: format 0x00000010 sratelo 16000 sratehi 16000 attributes 0 x00 usbaudio: registered dsp 14,19 usbaudio: constructing mixer for Terminal 3 type 0x0101 usbaudio: warning: found 1 of 0 logical channels. usbaudio: assuming the channel found is the master channel (got a Philips camera?). Should be fine. usbaudio: registered mixer 14,16 usb_audio_parsecontrol: usb_audio_state at f4a21fe0 It is not Philips, it is Logitech What can I check to see if it is working, or rather, if it is capable of working? Seems to me that this shouldn't be this difficult.
k3nz0o
Try spca webcam driver http://mxhaard.free.fr/download.html
SilverSurfer60
Don't worry about the error message as long as the camera works, it should do. I've had the very same message in all the releases of Mandrake & Mandriva I have installed using a webcam3 and webcam pro. Both cameras function although the error message is in dmesg and syslog. I ain't gonna dump a good piece of kit if it still works :P
RVDowning
I got this working last summer using the SPCA drivers. You guys are responding to a real old message.
