Dear user group

I am using Mandriva 2006 Discovery Beginners OS. I would like to be able to switch languages on my keyboard, in the same that I used to be able to with Windows 2000 Professonal.

Can I do this with Mandriva, and how would I go about it?

I appreciate any advice or help.

Thanks

Yes, really easy to do. I use it. Click System/Configuration/Configure Your Desktop/Accessibility/Keyboard Layout. Enable the Keyboard Layout option and then just add the layouts you need to the list.

I have United Kingdom (gb) at the top of the list, and is the default. Underneath this I have Poland (pl).

Ypou can assign any key combination to switch keyboard layouts. In KDE this should be done via "cofigure your desktop" -> Accessibility -> Keyboard Shortcuts

[1] Find there "Switch to next keyboard layout" , and assign the desired key combination. If you want a combination of modifier keys, like ctrl+shift, or alt+shift , KDE will not register those keypresses as a shortcut. Then you might do the following:

Go to the "keyboard layout" to the tab "xkb options". Find there the switch you'd like to have, check the box, apply changes. You may also want to make sure that "sticky switching" is enabled in the "Switching options" tab.

Now, when you start assigning that combination in [1], it will show up as ISO_Next_Group , and you can use it. There may be a better way to do it, but this is one thing that worked for me.

Dear User Group

Thank you ianw1974, neddie and uralmash for your help. I took your advice and I was thrilled when I eventually got an icon on the bottom bar with the flag of the language, which I can click on and change to the other language.

If I am just loading my pc up and the language of my choice is already on there, the characters work fine, but if I try to click on the flag symbol to change the language the keypad does not change. Even if I use a key combination which I set e.g. alt, control, K.

I have tested changing the languages whilst using a word processing document but even though the flag has changed, the keypad has not. i have tried everything that has been suggested by your selves but i do not understand the iso next group stuff.

It seems so close to working... has anyone got any ideas

ps, at the moment it says gb for UK english but I am getting Æ Ø Å !!!!!!!

Many thanks
