Slow booting...hangs on eth0

Anyone else have a problem at bootup where it takes forever to intitialize the eth0 ?

I have ADSL, so I thought this was just the time to login to the ADSL provider holding things up. But even when the line is all synced up, and I do a soft reboot, it takes forever for the eht0 to flash OK and continue booting.

This probably takes 2 minutes ever reboot.

Any ideas?

Don't have any good ideas on how to speedup, but my 9.0 on cable takes about 30-45 sec on the eth0 part of booting. The modem and router have an IP and are synched, but my cpu sits there for a time until it wakes up.

I figure it is just part of the boot process, but 2 min sounds too long. Can seem like an eternity. Wonder if it is RAM and CPU dependent too? I run AthlonXP 1.6 and 512MB PC2100 DDR RAM with 266 FSB here.

You may be right, 45 seconds may be more appropriate, 2 min is just a WAG, and probably one born of frustration.

I use DHCP to connect to my ADSL as well.

Using Xandros, I do not seem to have the same delay in booting, but Xandros doesn't show you the boot up sequence, so I'm not sure at all how long the eth0 boot takes compared to the other tasks.

I have the same problem from a few days ago. I don't know why because it was OK before.

I have installed KDE 3.1. Can it be the cause?. I know, it has no sense but I can't explain it.

No, KDE 3.03 here - same problem

Have you checked your logs in order to extract some info on the issue, for example:

dmesg | less

or

/var/log/messages

/var/log/dmesg

/var/log/syslog

...

...

My problem is with eth1 (wireless interfaz) because eth0 (ethernet interfaz) is not said to be active at boot.

What I have seen in the /var/log/messages and /var/log/syslog/ is a lot of messages like these ones:

Could it be the cause of the problem (I don't know anything about it)?

To be more scientific I actually timed my boot this am:

07:30:52 started

07:31:32 to eth0 startup (hd activity but not much)

07:32:40 eth0 finished booting continues

07:33:06 login to X

07:33:55 KDE 3.0.5a loaded and ready to go

Total 3:00:03 to boot... I don't have any servers or other services installed, just a basic workstation config.

For fun, I started my WinME laptop (business use) at same time. It beat ML by about 10 seconds, but because I have a registry backup utility it ends up about the same before you can use it. It shares the cable connection via a router that provides dhcp

It is a problem, though a little problem that you might want to fix in a future. But surely that is NOT the problem ;) Those messages are produced in just one second
