Dutch
Hi Has anyone got a Netgear PS101 print server to work under Linux? I've tried as many combinations as I can and am getting nowhere. I'm running Mandriva 2006 PowerPack and have all updates. Many thanks D
ianw1974
I'm presuming you assign an IP address to the print server device? If so, that is all you should need to use to print to the printer. Configure the correct printer driver, and then assign the IP address that you configured the printer for, and that's it. That's what I did for a networked printer in our office, so the principle should be the same.
coverup
Do as Ian said - configure the printe as follows: select connection type "Printer connected to remote LPD server", enter netgear's IP address in the remote host name box, and specify "lp" as remote printer name. Dutch
Do as Ian said - configure the printe as follows: select connection type "Printer connected to remote LPD server", enter netgear's IP address in the remote host name box, and specify "lp" as remote printer name. I tried this but no test page. I selected Add New Printer via Hardware in MCC, printer setup wizard, selected remote lpd server, put in the printer LAN IP address, printer drivers installed but nothing is coming out. The print server is accessible via a browser and works with this printer in XP, so there isn't any issues with the hardware........... Could this have anything to do with Guarddog firewall? Any help appreciated. Dutch Edited March 27, 2006 by Dutch
Dutch
Turns out it was my firewall! Tweaked the firewall, enabled the correct port (as per XP) and I've now got the print server online. D

Dutch
Nice one glad you got it sorted, nice and easy :P Thanks for the advice - much appreciated. :) One thing though - I had to enable the port in Guarddog in the Internet zone (as well as Local zone), to get the server to print?! I hope I'm not opening to the world.... WDYT? Dutch
ianw1974
Normally you shouldn't need to since all outgoing requests to printers are allowed out by default with the firewalls. It's just incoming requests that are blocked. I use shorewall, so not sure how guarddog works.
Guest mandeep
I am having a problem getting PS101 to work with my mandrake system. I have Linux mandrake 2.6.8.1-10mdk #1 Wed Sep 8 17:00:52 CEST 2004 i686 Pentium III (Coppermine) unknown GNU/Linux I tried all the tricks in the previous posts, but nothing works. The print server is accessible from the browser on this machine. I don't think I am running a firewall. How does one check?? I expect to see an icon in the lower right for a firewall, but there is none. "ps -ef|grep fire" does not show anything either. I used CUPS to configure the print server on this system. what does MCC refer to in teh previous post? I hope I am on the right forum. ianw1974
It will be shorewall most likely if one is running on your system: service shorewall status will display information if it's running. To see if the service is enabled: chkconfig --list shorewall if "On" is against runlevels 3 and 5, then it's running on your system: chkconfig shorewall off will stop it starting at bootup, and to stop it manually: service shorewall stop
