biikman
I'ver seartched the forum, and read a few threads very similar, and tried the advice given in them, but still cannot seem to get it going. I've ichecked to be sure cupsis installed: [dave@ dave]$ rpm -qa | grep cups cups-1.1.21-0.rc1.7mdk libcups2-1.1.21-0.rc1.7mdk cups-common-1.1.21-0.rc1.7mdk cups-drivers-10.1-0.2mdk But samba confuses me, it is installed, but a very big newbie. when I go to system.config/kde/peripherals/printers, it gives the "connection to cups failed, check that it is running and installed. From the above it is installed, but running? not sure. I did turn off the firewall on the XP system, wasn';t able to ping it before, now I can. Where do Istart? thanks biikman PS, I am also thinking about turning the XP system into a mandrake system. Is it easier to network and file share linux-linux than linux-xp? Because I also have had zero luck getting the 2 networked also. Edited March 3, 2006 by biikman
polemicz
Have you tried setting up Samba? You can do a simple set up in MCC or else use Swat (make sure it's installed) and entering localhost:901 in a browser url. You have to use Samba to communicate between Windows and Linux. biikman
Installed Swat, asks for a user name and password. Would this be from the XP system? tried my linux user/pass to no avail. remember I am extreme newbie, so there is no "simple" lol. went through the samba setup, but really unsure of what info to input. In print manager, selected add printer/class, then smb shared printer then normal account. Asks for user /pass, but again, not sure what it is looking for, XP user pass? I dont have one i use to loginto XP...If Igo past that, it does show "mshome" under printer, then local host, but under that pdf generator. ianw1974
There is a samba faq in the networking section in faq's, check this out, explains an easy way to get samba running for printing and more.
polemicz
user name for swat is root and password is root password, same deal if you configure cups from localhost:631. this is another aspect of linux security: not any old user can do administartive work on your system. Qchem
I'd recommend trying to configure CUPS directly via localhost:631 in a web browser. You don't really need to configure samba much (certainly don't need swat) to print to an XP printer - you will for file-sharing though.
