ted_zas
I have installed 10.1 - 10.2 ? During the install process when it asks what features I want I selected KDE and the other GUI. I also have 98 on this unit. A few weeks ago it was working and then during a brain storm I did something that corrupted the drives. I have reinstalled and in the process had to repurchase the set of disks. My CD reader is not the best and am in the process of getting a CD newer one. I thought I had bought replacement CDs but ended up with a new set (2206DE). This is why I am not sure of the version on the unit any more. Anyway I tried to reinstall the older on but the new one is on 2006DE? After the installation the unit keeps booting up with the shell and I do not know how to get the KDE to work. Sure would appreciate some help - direction- thanks a lot. ted
scarecrow
What's "2006DE"? :o Never heard of such a thing before... 2006 german, probably? Is there such a Mandriva Edition out there? Edited March 1, 2006 by scarecrow
jboy
What happens when you enter the startx command from the command line? If that takes you into KDE, then you probably just need to select the option to "Launch the Graphical Environment When Your System Starts" from the Boot section of the Mandrake Control Center. Regarding which version you have, check out the contents of the /etc/version file. That will tell you.

Hello, I think the 2006DE is linuscdshop's way of stating it is the december edition? Thanks, ted What happens when you enter the startx command from the command line? I took that as 'I must of really messed up during the install.' So I reinstalled it again. But this time I only 'X' one graphic KDE selection. Then went through the CD install. This time it came up with the KDE screen and appears to be working -so far-. I have a habit of fixing the fixed. It sure looks good and I appreciate the help. Thanks, ted
scarecrow
Ah, OK... I did not know of its existence. But you do know the "December Edition" is a prebeta of Mandriva 2006.1, and as such very buggy, do you?
ianw1974
Make sure that you set up your easyurpmi sources, and apply all updates to the system once up and running. It can help fix a lot of issues.

polemicz
My guess is you have the nasty xorg problem of 2006 when issued (since fixed in updates). As Ian said write down urpmi sources, particularly updates. When you boot into the console as root set up urpmi (urpmi.addmedia update... as noted in easy urpmi). Then all you have to do is urpmi --auto-select. Then try startx.
