Mandriva install with SATA

Hi,

 

New member - seeking some guidance.

 

Purchased Linux Format Jan 06 with Mandriva distro.

 

Interested in trying LINUX for first time. Installed separate SATA 150 drive just for LINUX - to surf the internet, with less viruses.

 

ERROR message when installing Mandriva:

 

insmod'ing module sata_sil failed at usr/lib/libDrakX/modules.pm line 340.

 

NEW HP a1210 w/ 2 drives

 

Having checked the BIOS - boots from CD/DVD (after Non-installed Floppy system)

 

Will Mandriva install from/onto a SATA drive - driver?

 

Without an IDE drive can Mandriva install/find my SATA drives?

 

Install ask to pick driver from about 40 - those I chose wouldn't work.

 

Suggestions?

I need the entire model number. Or, you can go to HP's ite and get the details about the sata contoller. Perhaps they gave you an acyual spec sheet. You need to know the actual controller name and then load that driver.

I called HP and they did not have the sata controller driver available in their data base - they said they would email me. Though they said with a: seagate barricuda sata 150 & my wd caviar se sata 150 it must have a sata contoller.

Do you have Windows on the machine, did it come pre-loaded?

 

If so, I would be tempted to boot Windows, and then go into Device Manager, find the disk controller, and check the properties, and find out the driver info from within here.

 

That's probably your most easiest and quickest method to find out. Then, you can make a dual boot with Windows, or remove Windows and put Linux on it, now that you know what the driver is.

It is a generic Asus motherboard. Uses ATi chipset(!!) You should be able to get the info directly from Asus. As you can see, HP/Compaq hasn't the faintest idea! :lol:

Yes, Windows XP came pre-loaded. I would like to leave it on the Seagate and install Mandriva on the Western Digital.

 

I have checked in the Device Manager, Under my:

Seagate hard drive:

c:\windows\system32\drivers\disk.sys and

c:\windows\system32\drivers\PartMgr.sys

W.D. hard drive:

c:\windows\system32\drivers\disk.sys and

c:\windows\system32\drivers\PartMgr.sys

 

Under IDE/ATA/ATAPI controllers:

2 Primary IDE, 2 Secondary IDE - all:

c:\windows\system32\drivers\atapi.sys

 

2 Standard Dual Channel

Device Instance ID

 

DOES WINDOWS XP provide dual boot and does that provide greater stability (on my hardware) than using Mandriva tools - my only other question about the install is partitioning. Greatest stability and separation of XP on Seagate and Mandriva on Western Digital.

Yes, I followed Ians directions.

 

HP has been very good so far - the engineer I spoke to told me he would research and email today.

 

When I tried installing Mandriva the system locked up not allowing me to exit - I had to shut down.

 

Mandriva found ATi chipset but stopped at line 340.

The SATA controller is the Radeon Xpress 200 northbridge itself. I don't think it's supported by kernel 2.6.12 (the chipset had hit the market some one year ago), you will need a newer kernel revision (probably 2.6.13 or 14).

HP is just incredible: That machine has an ATI mainboard and Nvidia GF 6200SE GPU! :P

As for getting support from HP, you'd better expect an eskimo cultivating bananas...

Mandriva still uses 2.6.12, although support for the chip isn't unlikely (Mandiva's kernels are heavily patched). Did you try disabling the software RAID before installing?

What worries me is that "sata_sil" shouldn't be the correct module for the above SATA controller (but then I never had an ATI mainboard, so I can't sware...).

Anyway, Mandriva's latest release is here:
