can't adjust screen past 1024x780 without issues

I am having an issue with my recent installation of Mandrake 10 (Community). When I increase the screen size to over 1024X768 the screen will wrap over itself. When the mouse gets to the right end of the screen and you keep going, it appears on the left side for ~ 300 pixels. I.e. it is drawing the screen in 800x600, it is just making up for the portion it cannot display by recycling itself.

 

HW stats:

* Monitor - IBM 6556 P72

* Graphics Card - Hercules terminator 4000x (Kyro chipset).

 

I know that both the Card & the Monitor can support up to 1280x1024 as I was doing so under Windows XP. Has anyone come accross this problem before? Is there any more information that I need to supply?

Is there any particular reason why you're using 10.1 Community? This was quite buggy release, you'd be better off with 10.1 Official, or LE2005.

 

Community was released first like a testing bed, which then ended up being the Official version.

Oops! Sorry, it is the official version - when typing the prob I wasnt sure which it was that I installed - courtesy of reburning about 4 sets of various versions I had in order to at least install 1 that worked!! (had all sorts of install problems due to faulty CDROM drive)

Have you tried reconfiguring the card?

 

If you can, run MCC and then go into hardware, select your card, and go to run config.

 

Then find out what card is selected, and also what monitor type. Then post back. Is it exactly correct and matched to your hardware, or are slightly different options chosen. It might be worthwhile trying generic options and see if you get any joy from that.

Remove one line of them (either should be OK). Actually under your current config you could remove both- the framebuffer driver doesn't support any king of GL or/and video acceleration.

Hey! Thanks heaps for your help, thanks also for all the replys - sorry for my late reply, i have been away on a holiday for the last week.

I replaced the "fbdev" with "vesa" and it fixed the problem straight away. Thanks! :D

Also try installing monitor-edid. It is available on your CDROM discs.

It is used to properly identify your monitor and will make all the appropiate setting changes for you. There is no need to do cli to set up your monitor at all.

After you install monitor-edid it is useful to do a change in MCC ----->Services and set harddrake to be active and then do a reboot (one of the rare times in Mandriva when a reboot is helpful). After rebooting remember to disable harddrake again in MCC Services.

Very likely that will do it all for you but to double check open MCC ----> Hardware ---->Configure your Monitor. You will see Plug'n Play and if it shows your Monitor name in brackets along side then all has been done. If not then simply double click on Plug'n Play and wait a little time and the monitor name should appear. If it doesn't, then it means you are one of the rare unlucky ones to have a Monitor that Monitor-edid doesn't know about. It will truly be rare.

Then you can change the screen resolution if you wish in MCC and/or in KDE Control Centre ----> Peripherals -------> Display. All of these options will be as applicable to your particular Monitor and its limits.
