scarecrow
http://ltmodem.heby.de/ For Lucent/Agere AMR modems, don't waste your time... they won't work. You can always use a PCMCIA (for laptops) modem, or an external serial one (for desktops), which you can get for little money.
JonEberger
my guess is that pcmcia is the way to go if you have a laptop. i always tried to get the drivers going and never could. but i'm not the most linux-apt in the world. :-)
Trio3b
Can't advise about laptops, but yes, for desktop dialup, external serial port modems are the way to go. I have installed nonlinux AND linux compatible internal PCI modems and it is doable but painful. The actual installation of drivers is easy. Rounding up everything you need, eg. drivers, kernel source, information, can take weeks. 1. Check that your ISP plays nice with linux 2. Google for BestData or US Robotics external serial port modem (not USB, they are usually winmodems) 3. If money is an issue, go to ebay or your local thriftshop. I buy them $5 or less (sometimes have to find AC adapter). ck to make sure it is 56k. 34 k modems are fine. Stay away fron anything less than 34k good luck!
