Qchem
Also Qchem the same thing happens if he tries to ssh into my box. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> But the user mysti does exist on his box? Are they forwarding port 22 on their setup too?

Are they forwarding port 22 on their setup too? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Yes it does and he's very savvy in networking so I'm sure his box is set up correctly. Qchem
Does /var/log/secure tell you anything, on either end?

Qchem
Nothing relevant in /var/log/messages either? Checking for PAM errors might be an idea.

Checking for PAM errors might be an idea. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I don't have a /var/log/messages. Just for the hell of it I recompiled PAM with ssh support but it didn't make a difference. Sorry I don't feel like I'm being very helpful here but I'm just completely stumped by this problem. I've been using ssh with the same set up for almost two years and nothing has changed. Qchem
Do you not have a system logger running? If so, try taking a look at its output file.
mystified
It just shows a PAM authentication failure.
jboy
There's a section in /etc/sshd_config about PAM authentication. Do you need to have UsePAM set to yes? # Set this to 'yes' to enable PAM authentication, account processing, # and session processing. If this is enabled, PAM authentication will # be allowed through the ChallengeResponseAuthentication mechanism. # Depending on your PAM configuration, this may bypass the setting of # PasswordAuthentication, PermitEmptyPasswords, and # "PermitRootLogin without-password". If you just want the PAM account and # session checks to run without PAM authentication, then enable this but set # ChallengeResponseAuthentication=no UsePAM no
mystified
There's nothing about PAM in my /etc/ssh/ssh_config file.
jboy
No, it should be in /etc/ssh/sshd_config
mystified
I don't have a sshd_config.
mystified
My mistake. Yes I do have a sshd_config and I changed PAM authentication to no with the same results.
