Hi, I have just finished installing Mandriva LE 2005 download edition on my pc. The installation seemed to go ok but when I try to boot linux now it halts. I can get to the first menu where I select linux (I have tried the other option and that doesn't work either) and it seems to start booting, but then it halts. Here is what is visible on the screen when in halts:

PCI: Using configuration type 1

Here is a description of my system:

Emachine 180

Intel Celeron Processor

Two built in Enhanced IDE Controllers

Advanced Power management (APM) and ACPI

System BIOS and video BIOS shadow RAM

Plug and Play (PnP) BIOS feature

Alot of that is irrellevant but I wanted to give as accurate a description of my problem as possible. Any help as to what is causing the halt and how it mite be dealt with would be much appreciated.

First of all welcome aboard :)

At the boot-selection, hit F1 for more options. then try to boot your sytem with the following parameters:

linux noapic nolapic

As you have a Plug'n'Play BIOS, you might need to disable this feature in the BIOS.

Hope that helps. :)

That hasn't worked either, this is what I'm writing: linux noapic nolapic pci=usepirqmask ide=nodma, and here is what I'm getting back:

Enabling fast FPU save and restore...done

Enabling unmasked SIMD FPU exception report...done

Checking 'hlt' instruction...OK.

BIOS Bug, local APIC #0 not detected!

checking if image is initramfs...it isn't (no cpio magic); looks like an initrd

Freeing initrd memory: 148k freed

I'm starting to get a horrible feeling that I might have to go back to XP

I would download a Knoppix Live-CD now for a general system check. If Knoppix won't boot, then your Motherboard might be incompatible with Linux. If it works, we should get your system running.

Can you specify which motherboard you have in your computer?

Ok, I got knoppix up on it now (although it did take a very long time to start up) and it is showing my two disk partitions. I'll try and find my computer manual with my motherboard details in now. BTW I have also tried a Whax live CD but that didn't work.

I've found my booklet, on the front it says IM845GL Motherboard, then there is a specifications section and here is exactly what is says under Main Chipset:

Intel 82845GL Graphics Memory Controller Hub (GMCH)

Processor/Host bus support

Integrated DRAM controller

Integrated graphics AC '97 controller

Integrated 3D/2D graphics accelerator

Integrated 350 MHz RAMDAC

Arithmetic stretch blitter video

Power Management functions

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Intel 82801DB I/O Controller Hub (ICH4)

Support for the PCI interface

Integrated IDE controller

USB 2.0 and DMA controller

Power Management logic

Real-time clock

Support for AC '97 audio devices

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Intel 82802AB Firmware Hub (FWH)

Firmware Hub

=====================================

I'm not sure if any of that is of any use but I can't get onto my other box right now because the monitor is being used by someone else.

Hm, I cannot see anything that should not work with Mandriva The Chipset is quite well known, the other specs should not be problematic. Do you have any usb devices or printers conncted to the system? If yes, unplug them and try the install cd once more (you can also try with the second cd in case the first one ihappens to be a bad burn).

Do you have an Audio card of some kind (not onboard) ???. If you do then check in the BIOS and make certain that the onboard audio is disabled. If that is already the case then try moving the card to a lower PCI socket.

It seems like an IRQ conflict and moving the Audio card is often the answer.

Cheers. John.

Hi, I don't have an audio card, the only pci device I have is some sort of FAX modem, or at least thats what is looks like. It might be used for my internet connection but I'm not to sure. Should I try moving this? If I should do I just need to take it out and put it in another slot with no configuration?

Is there any point in me trying a different distro? Or should I try the paid version instead of the free one? I don't want to spend hours downloading and checking if I'm just going to get exaclty the same problem.

I guess your PCI modem is a winmodem. Winmodems are evil, crappy things, which use the soundcard IRQ for achieving voicing capabilities. Many of them aren't Linux compatible, and a few of them are hardly windows-compatible, either!

What happens if you remove the PCI winmodem completely?

And no, normally there is no point trying another distro with the same hardware configuration...
