  1. I'm having problems starting kwrite from the terminal as root. As a normal user I can access it without problems, but as soon as I try to start it as root, to edit files etc, I get this: kwrite: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libfontconfig.so.1: undefined symbol: FT_Free Any ideas?
  2. OK thanks, sorry I've taken so long but your original method has now worked, I stopped the MAC address filtering thing, then I could connect easily. Once I restarted the MAC filtering the connection continued to work, so I don't have a clue what that was about but it worked. Thanks Qchem.
  3. there is a setting on my router that only allows certain MAC addresses to connect, however my current MAC address has been set to be allowed. could this have anything to do with the problem? I shall try disabling all firewall settings etc when I get home on Sunday as I am away at the moment. thanks Fink
  4. thanks again for the reply. the dhclient itself seems to work, but it still doesn't get my connection working. I've also tried some other dhcp client things such as pump etc but they did not get my connection working either. Anymore ideas? maybe another approach or am I fighting a losing battle?
  5. thanks alot for the reply, i've done that and i'm not getting that error anymore. however, I'm now getting a completely different error: /etc/dhcpcd/dhcpcd.exe : line 27: . : filename argument required . : usage : . filename [arguments] This happens after i put in the 'dhcpcd eth2' line. any ideas?
  6. thanks again for the reply, everything seemed to be going well until i typed the final line (dhcpcd eth2), when i got an error bash: dhcpcd: command not found any thoughts on why this is happening?
  7. thanks, i'll give it a try. the network i'm trying to connect to doesn't have a key so should i leave that line out?
  8. 9. Hi, i've just set up Mandriva 2006 on my laptop. All is going well except that my wireless connection refuses t work. I can set up a wireless interface, and mandriva seems to accept my wireless card (ipw2200). I follow all the steps through the configuration and then finish. I then click on the 'Wireless Connection' tab, here it seems to show my wireless network. I click on it, then click connect, but nothing happens. The little tab in the bottom right of the screen says 'Connection down on interface eth2. Click 'Configure Network''. I can also get the little tab in the corner to show the signal strength of my wireless network, but again when i roll over it it says 'Connection down on interface eth2. Click 'Configure Network''. When i try to configure the Network it changes nothing. Any advice would be much appreciated Niall
  10. hi, I've been trying to set up a speedtouch adsl modem but I've given up on it and I'm now planning to use this: http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/in...oduct_uid=48449 I'm not sure if my serial port port will work with it or not, I have a pci modem that has two serial ports and one other one above the usb ports. I would like to know if it will be easy for me to set up my connection (any links on how would be great) or whether I would need a new pci adapter. Thanks Niall
  11. Hi, just writing to say thanks to Ovidiu and everyone else who helped me. The problem was indeed with my Legacy USB support which is now disabled. I now have a fully working linux system! All I have to do now is set up my adsl modem but I think I can handle that lol. Niall
  12. well i've just removed the card a rebooted but that didn't work, would I need to re-install? niall
  13. Ah well...is there anywhere I can go from here? Maybe a new PCI modem? Couldn't I just remove the PCI card? as I have one of those external broadband modems that connects to the PC via USB, or wouldn't that work either? Niall
  14. Is there any point in me trying a different distro? Or should I try the paid version instead of the free one? I don't want to spend hours downloading and checking if I'm just going to get exaclty the same problem. Niall
  15. Hi, I don't have an audio card, the only pci device I have is some sort of FAX modem, or at least thats what is looks like. It might be used for my internet connection but I'm not to sure. Should I try moving this? If I should do I just need to take it out and put it in another slot with no configuration? Niall
  16. I've found my booklet, on the front it says IM845GL Motherboard, then there is a specifications section and here is exactly what is says under Main Chipset: Intel 82845GL Graphics Memory Controller Hub (GMCH) Processor/Host bus support Integrated DRAM controller Integrated graphics AC '97 controller Integrated 3D/2D graphics accelerator Integrated 350 MHz RAMDAC Arithmetic stretch blitter video Power Management functions ------------------------------------------------------------------- Intel 82801DB I/O Controller Hub (ICH4) Support for the PCI interface Integrated IDE controller USB 2.0 and DMA controller Power Management logic Real-time clock Support for AC '97 audio devices ------------------------------------------------------------------- Intel 82802AB Firmware Hub (FWH) Firmware Hub ===================================== I'm not sure if any of that is of any use but I can't get onto my other box right now because the monitor is being used by someone else. Niall
  17. OK, that's disappeared somewhere but I will try to find it. Can anyone help me with what to do next? Niall
  18. Ok, I got knoppix up on it now (although it did take a very long time to start up) and it is showing my two disk partitions. I'll try and find my computer manual with my motherboard details in now. BTW I have also tried a Whax live CD but that didn't work. Niall
  19. That hasn't worked either, this is what I'm writing: linux noapic nolapic pci=usepirqmask ide=nodma, and here is what I'm getting back: Enabling fast FPU save and restore...done Enabling unmasked SIMD FPU exception report...done Checking 'hlt' instruction...OK. 20. Thanks, I've just tried that and the messages shown on the screen has changed slightly but it is still halting in the same place. Anymore ideas? Niall
  21. Hi, I have just finished installing Mandriva LE 2005 download edition on my pc. The installation seemed to go ok but when I try to boot linux now it halts. I can get to the first menu where I select linux (I have tried the other option and that doesn't work either) and it seems to start booting, but then it halts. Here is what is visible on the screen when in halts: PCI: Using configuration type 1 ntrr: v2.0 (20020519) ACPI: Subsystem revison 20050211 ACPI: Interpreter disabled Linux Plug and Play support v0.97 © pnp PnP ACPI: disabled PCI: Probing PCI hardware PCI: Probing PCI hardware (bus 00) PCI: Ignoring BARO-3 of IDE controller 0000:00.1f.1 PCI: Transparent bridge - 0000:00:1e.0 PCI: Using IRQ router PIIX/ICH [8086/24c0]at 0000:00.1f.0 PCI: -> APIC IRQ transform: 0000:00:02.0 [A] -> IRQ 16 PCI: -> APIC IRQ transform: 0000:00:1d.0 [A] -> IRQ 16 PCI: -> APIC IRQ transform: 0000:00:1d.1 -> IRQ 19 PCI: -> APIC IRQ transform: 0000:00:1d.2 [C] -> IRQ 18 PCI: -> APIC IRQ transform: 0000:00:1d.7 [D] -> IRQ 23 PCI: -> APIC IRQ transform: 0000:00:1f.1 [A] -> IRQ 17 PCI: -> APIC IRQ transform: 0000:00:1f.3 -> IRQ 17 PCI: -> APIC IRQ transform: 0000:00:1f.5 -> IRQ 17 PCI: -> APIC IRQ transform: 0000:02:02.0 [A] -> IRQ 17 PCI: -> APIC IRQ transform: 0000:02:0b.0 [A] -> IRQ 23 Simple Boot flag at 0x3b 0x1 apm: BIOS version 1.2 Flags 0x03 (Driver Version 1.18ac) Here is a description of my system: Emachine 180 Intel Celeron Processor Two built in Enhanced IDE Controllers Advanced Power management (APM) and ACPI System BIOS and video BIOS shadow RAM Plug and Play (PnP) BIOS feature Alot of that is irrellevant but I wanted to give as accurate a description of my problem as possible.
