Ixthusdan
This is more of an observation than a question, but I am posting it here in case others might find it useful. Recently, after the privious nvidia driver update, I encounterd a problem with my computer freezing in both linux and windows. It was worse in windows, of course. I could not figure out what was wrong. Suspecting a thermal problem, I turmed on the temperature warning mechanisms in my computer's bios. Sure enough, I had a temperature issue with my cpu. But, my fans were running fine. I installed a windows program from which I could continuously watch the temperature. My cpu was running 151 - 156 degrees F. At 160, it would shut down. I could not figure out the reason. I then down loaded the lastest nvidia driver and noticed a drop in temp by 2-4 degrees. On the nvidia web sight is a section of recommended bios settings. With nothing else to lose, I went down their list and made two changes that I considered minor. Now, my computer is back down in the 135-140 range, which is normal for my setup. So, it seems that the nvidia video can really work the cpu if things are not as they recommend. I learned something new. Ixthusdan
A follow-up note to all of this- The fact that my northbridge went out on my motherboard causes me to believe that all the issues I was experienceing were due to that unfortunate circumstance. So, the proper settings may actually do something but not as impressive as I have first stated. A bad chipset, particularly a northbridge and an agp slot, have more to do with my temperature problems than a few bios settings.
