Help! - Yet another internet connection refusal

Greetings

 

I have an HP nx8220 laptop with a "broadcom netxtreme bcm5751m" wich is correctly detected by Mandrake 10.2

 

I tryed to connect it to the internet (cable) and I can't arrive to make it work.

 

I also have a desktop with a lan card and the same internet connection and I don't have problems.

 

I used the same connection options of the desktop and it still won't work

 

I also tryed to install Ubuntu, but during the installation process it said it couldn't retrieve a dhcp adress.

 

Can somebody help

Have you allocated an IP address to the machine?

 

Make a note of the settings for the PC that works (IP Address, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway, DNS), and then make sure the Mandriva system is configured the same way.

I tryed that and it didn't work

 

My desktop connection is via dhcp, isn't that suppose to work with the laptop too?

It should do. Have you got dhcp-client and dhcp-common installed, as you'll need these to get an IP address?

Yes I have that installed

 

I also have to note that I preformed the same installation in the laptop, iI didn't change anything comparing to the desktop

Can you ping the machine that works from the laptop?

I tryed to ping the dektop but I didn't succeed.

 

I used "ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xx (the desktop adress)" but I didn't do any lan setup

have you activated the ethernet card? (if not, no wonder you cannot ping anything. ;))

 

please open a terminal and log in as root (type "su", followed by root password)

now give us the output of the following commands:

 

ifconfig

 

and

 

ifup eth0

Hi there

 

I think this is a problem of the laptop. I have it for only a few days and didn't either manage to also connect it in windows xp. I'm going to phone hp technical support and then I'll tell you what happened.
