Trio3b
I have been buying external serial hdwr modems ( not USB--they are usually sftwr modems) for $1 to $3 at the local thrift store. As mentioned previously, they work great with linux, require no drivers, and are faster and require less configuration than many internal PCI modems ( which require drivers whether or not they are sftwr or hdwr modems). Only hassle is sometimes you have to match up an AC power adapter for them which takes about 5 min. digging thru a pile. If you want a cheap internal hdwr PCI modem - google for the AMIGO AMI IA56 with Intel 536ep chipset - about $15......drivers that come with are for 2.4.x kernel. If you are using 2.6.x kernel you will have to dwnld from Intel site. Be prepared to spend some time on this. good luck
