iam a linux newbie. a few weeks ago i installed mandrake on a desktop. can boot into mandrake,w98 or w2k. the desktop is connected to a SMC broadband router via ethernet cable.

today i installed mandrake on my laptop. cant seem to get a wireless connection.

its uses a dell truemobile 1300 wlan mini pci card.

after that i tried a SMC EZ connect wireless PC card via the PCMCIA slot-- still no wireless connection.

lastly i connected the laptop via ethernet cable, no problem, can get online

how do i get a wireless connection going. i looked in the configuration panel, but without much success. during the bootup i get the eth0:failed but i really dont know where i should look/do to investigate the problem.

Since Dell doesn't publish Linux drivers for their wireless ethernet cards, you're going to need NdisWrapper to get your wireless network going. Search this forum and Google for HOWTO's about this subject. It's not too difficult, especially with Mandrake.

Here's a link to their website, they have more information there. I think they even have Mandrake-specific installation instructions.

ndiswrapper.sourceforge.net

Good luck,

Nate

holy crap, i did some reading. this is way to much for me.  it took me 2 days to get java installed and working. looks like i will be connected to my laptop via ethernet cable for a while.

If you don't mind spending $20, there is a commercial product with the same functionality called linuxant http://www.linuxant.com. They provide excellent support, and the installation is easy. You can try it for free, and if it works for you, then buy a license.

ndiswrapper really isn't that difficult. On MDV 10.1 or 10.2, all you should need to do is install the ndiswrapper package, get a hold of the correct Windows driver and install it with ndiswrapper -i file.inf, then maybe do 'modprobe ndiswrapper' for luck. Then you can configure from drakconf the rest of the way.

when i started reading up on (ndiswrapper)it-- all the command line stuff made me nervous, iam still learning about the linux file structure, permissions, and the basic commands to use in DOS, opps i mean BASH. the package from linuxant.com seems easier and they provide something i may need,, namely support. it took me 2 days to get java installed and working and i have yet to get limewire going. i find all this challenging and fun though. my windows box was getting stale.
