Darkelve
Linspire Press Release: http://www.linspire.com/lindows_news_pressreleases.php Osnews article: http://www.osnews.com/comment.php?news_id=9984 Screenshots: http://www.linspire.com/lindows_news_galle...mage=screenshot I'm downloading it right now (no it isn't free, but I'm a lifetime member). With SuSe 9.3 coming out next month, I've got 2 things to have lots of fun with! Plus I downloaded SimplyMepis 3.3 yesterday... which is very good, as long as you have a decent amount of RAM ( ar least 384 or better 512; why the hell does it start ALL of those services at boot??). Edit: don't bother going to their website ATM, it's under such heavy load none of the links really work... Darkelve P.S. Gowator, aren't you curious as well? arctic
the links do work. but i still do not like the linspire -look. the blue-green combination always reminds me of winxp, which i really hate. well, the money-stuff is a totally different topic, so i won't say anything about it. ;)
adamw
Looks like they did a good job on their own path, kudos to them. I just wish they'd make their patches better, though - other distros (including us) might like to use some of them, but it's pretty hard right now. The latest available 'source' for Linspire's phonegaim is a single huge monolithic patch against gaim 1.0.2 which fails to apply over a thousand chunks against stock gaim 1.1.4, which makes it pretty much unusable. Shame...

I think you shouldnt take any notice of the bloke at your local computer store also. Not to mention the fact that it doesnt look like windows at all, it looks a lot better http://www.zone38.net/blog/pics/xp_desktop.jpg http://images.linspire.com/screenshots/ss-...re50all-800.jpg besides, the idea of it is to be easy for ex windows users to use, maybe as a platform into further distros, either way, i think its a good thing, not a bad thing. Well yeah, i haven't even tried the distro so i can't really say much about it, maybe it was bad in the past? Maybe he was talking about it from years ago or something. It's just never intrested me before, i don't see that changing now. I'm happy with my Ubuntu. Maybe ill test it on my dads PC though, since it looks good for a someone new to linux. But then again Mandrake is very easy for new users aswell. :) Edited March 18, 2005 by Lowe
adamw
iphitus: of course I could do that, but then we'd have, well, gaim 1.0.2. Which is out of date and missing lots of cool stuff (and I think doesn't work with MSN any more). My point is that if they built a smaller set of modular patches and kept them properly documented and updated, it'd be a lot easier to use phonegaim with a proper up to date version of gaim, which is what other distros would like to do, and the reason why none of them use it now. axel_2078
I'm just not down with Linspire's CNR crap and their proprietary tools. Plus, it reminds me too much of Windows and I turned to Linux to get away from Windows. I'm also not down with that yearly subscription crap along with registration fees. Darkelve
Here's the review: http://linuxinformer.ducaet.be/Linspire5_review.pdf Screenshots I included look a little bad, dunno why... By the way, the font issue was due to my low resolution and refresh rate.
