phunni
Most of the music apps I've seen (for creating music, not listenting to it...) say that running them as root will improve performance - especially jack; which then also requires it's clients to run as root... Is there a reasonable alternative? Or a way to run them as root but minimise the risks/problems?
Guest anon
that running them as root will improve performance - I can't help you, but can you tell me why running as root improves performance?
devries
Root has realtime acces to kernel processes improving latency. If I remember correctly the SELinux project has developed a kernel module that allowes a 'normal' user to have realtime acces. You can test the difference by running qjackctl, config, uncheck realtime, let it start jack and run a program like rosegarden and by running qjackctl ar root with realtime checked. http://www.music.columbia.edu/pipermail/li...ber/005345.html
Guest anon
Root has realtime acces to kernel processes improving latency. Didn't know that,
thac
Root has realtime acces to kernel processes improving latency. Didn't know that, <{POST_SNAPBACK}> This is what the multimedia-kernel is fixing among other things. phunni
Is there a simple patch for this and, if so, where can I get it?
devries
http://www.muse-sequencer.org/wiki/index.p...time-lsm_module Or, as Thac suggested, install the mm kernel. It comes with the realtime-lsm module. :)
fissy
Could you use http://www.musicpd.org/ (MPD) as root and connect to it using a normal user client?its supposed to be network transparent so it shouldn't have a problem with a different user on the same computer
phunni
This is not just for listening - but also creating music. It doesn't sound like MPD is for that...
