Running music software as root

Most of the music apps I've seen (for creating music, not listenting to it...) say that running them as root will improve performance - especially jack; which then also requires it's clients to run as root...

Is there a reasonable alternative? Or a way to run them as root but minimise the risks/problems?

Root has realtime acces to kernel processes improving latency. If I remember correctly the SELinux project has developed a kernel module that allowes a 'normal' user to have realtime acces. You can test the difference by running qjackctl, config, uncheck realtime, let it start jack and run a program like rosegarden and by running qjackctl ar root with realtime checked.
