Guest reaper
Hey I have Mandrake 10 and soon I will get ADSL. It will be connected to my computer through USB port. Is there a chance of setting it up in Mandrake, because I have a winmodem and can't go to internet... If anyone knows how, I will appreciate it.... daniewicz
Is it possible to connect to your DSL through an ethernet card instead of the USB? The ethernet card would not require any drivers.
fangbite
Use the ethernet card if at all possible. Then you can easily configure it. I'm not sure about how the usb thing works.
Dustpuppy
If your modem's going to be an Alcatel, try Let's Eat Gary's thread. From personal experience, it works but it's not terribly stable. Getting a router made things much better.

Guest reaper
My ADSL provider is giving me an ADSL modem that can only be connected to my computer through USB port. I am new to linux, so I don't know if it is possible that linux recognizes that I'm connected through USB to the net. I believe that I can find an ADSL modem that has ethernet connections to PC, but as far as my provider is concerned, if I buy the equipment myself there is no techical support. I'm on my own... I don't know of any usb-to-ethernet convertor and never heard of such a thing so if I can setup linux to have access to the net through USB it would be great... Any ideas????? :D
ChrisM
Is your ISP likely to provide you with support if you have USB/Linux? If so, you maight get instructions on installtion - but don't hold your breath. Do you know what your modem manufacturer/model is? As Dustpuppy suggests, if its a Speedtouch, follow his link. If its another make/model, do a search and see if that brings up anything and if your still outta luck, post your details. Getting a USB connection can be a real pain as can be vouched on this board by the many (you'll need to get hold of drivers); if you are able to, then go for ethernet - no driver installation, and a lot less hassle = speedier connection.
