Guest msensay
I know, I know, why on earth would anyone need a floppy drive anymore.....well regardless I want the floppy drive to work on my Mandrake 10.1, and no matter what I do I can't get it to behave properly. ------- Error: ------- Whenever I try to mount /dev/fd0 using either of these 2 commands mount -t vfat /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy -or- mount -t msdos /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy The drives LED goes on for about 10 seconds, and then I get the message: mount: /dev/fd0: can't read superblock What I've tried: 1) Disabling supermount (which I find annoying anyway) 2) Editing my /etc/fstab in every way conceivable 3) put the floppy, with cable, into another windows machine to make sure the hardware is good - it is Here is the latest /etc/fstab - other than the floppy issue, everything works like a charm /dev/hda1 / ext3 defaults 1 1 none /dev/pts devpts mode=0620 0 0 /dev/hda6 /home ext3 defaults 1 2 /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy auto noauto, user, sync 0 0 /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom auto umask=0,user,iocharset=iso885915,codepage=850,noauto,ro,exec,users 0 0 none /proc proc defaults 0 0 /dev/hda5 swap swap defaults 0 0 Any help at all would be extremely appreciated. pmpatrick
Try using this fstab entry for your floppy: /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy auto codepage=850,user,sync,noauto,nosuid,nodev,iocharset=iso8859-1 0
aRTee
Welcome to the board! If you're mounting by hand, you bypass supermount and fstab (unless you only have one argument, you used 2 so fstab options etc get bypassed). Question: are you sure the floppy controller on the mainboard works? Your drive is fine, as is the cable and floppy, but the controller may be broken (incl bad contacts on the motherboard connector and such)... Can you boot from a bootfloppy to DOS? This would make sure it works... Let us know how you're doing, and enjoy Linux. Ps any hardware that should normally work with Linux, should work with it. I agree 100%. BTW I have made very good use of floppies this year, so they may be obsolete but still come in very handy...
Guest msensay
Hey guys, Thanks a million for all the help! I first tried pmpatricks suggestion, and the same issue - LED on for 10 seconds, then the bad superblock message. aRTee, you hit the nail on the head - I tried to boot to a DOS floppy, and this failed, so definitely controller/motherboard issue. You guys are great, thanks again a keep up the good fight! darkelve - you can set this to solved - tx
