devries
The Mandrake default is pretty good :) There really is no need to (except for educational purposes) to change/build your own kernels.
phunni
actually - building your own can improve performance - but it's not worth trying until you are a bit more comfortable with linux generally. So I'd agree with going for the mandrake default to get you started
SoulSe
I disagree - it's never too early to roll-your-own. It's not difficult either. Why wait? Learn as much as you can as quick as you can. Get cracking on a vanilla kernel.
volfro
I agree with SoulSe. I'm a total newbie--had Mandrake 10 installed for about a week, but have used Redhat before--and I'm trying to build a custom kernel. I don't know if there's a way to learn more, unless you feel like sorting through all the documentation on the net. Which I tried. It's boring. I'd rather just do it. Hands-on is often the best way to learn. I went with the 10.6.8 kernel at kernel.org--'Drake uses 10.6.3. Hopefuly it'll work, when I finally get it installed... I successfully compiled my kernel and made the modules, but when I make install the modules, I get errors. I think it's because I don't have oprofile installed, but I'm having trouble with that installation too. Speaking of which (ahem) could anybody help me with that? Details are right here.
