Hey Guys,

Just about to buy my first edition of Mandrake Linux and wanted your opinion on which edition to buy. I am looking into buying Mandrake Linux 9.0 either the Standard or Powerpack edition.

I am a complete novice with Linux and have never used it before!! I have used a SMALL amount of Unix at Uni while doing my degree in Business IT so I am not a computer novice.

I want a version that I will be able to use as a novice but as a become more confident with it have extra features that will further develop my learning. This kinda points to the powerpack edition. Is the powerpack edition exactly the same as the standard edition just with more features and apps?

If so which would you recommmend to me? I am thinking more towards the powerpack edition, Is this the right decision?

Thanks for any help, much appreciated.

Save yourself money at the outset and buy the 3 CD download edition from Linux Emporium. This is what I always do. They cost £2.50 a CD + £1.50 p&p.

I don't work for Linux Emporium I just like their cheapness and efficiency. They'll sell you the boxed set too if you want.

I've downloaded all my Manrake updates since 7.2, so I may be speaking out of turn on the newer releases. Having said this, I'm pretty certain that the main differences in the Standard and Powerpack editions are that: 1) the Powerpack includes more commercial vendor packages (i.e. IBMDB2), 2) more server software (i.e. Apache Advanced Extranet), and 3) longer Tech Support period.

As far as coding, compiling, and working with the Linux OS in general, the Standard edition should work fine for you. Of course, if you're looking to set up alot of web services, or want to work with some of the vendor supplied packages, go with the Powerpack.

Maybe you should instead consider joining Mandrake Club

Anyway I think your money would be better spent buying some support:

and maybe a manual:

and downloading (or getting someone to download it for you) Mandrake 9 and some additional packages

I actually agreed with Gregor. If you have the connection or the place to buy the cheap cds from, it's better just to download or buy the GPL cds and give the money to mandrakeclub. That way, mandrake actually receive most of the money instead of the outside publisher.
