still not saving properly...

I edit it using the meathod I said before, go into mandrake and its not changed.

I can edit it, reboot and go into linux and its still changed the way I made it but as soon as I go into mandrake its goes back to default. Its as though mandrake is changing it back to origional.

Would you mind repeating the exact steps you are editing and saving, from beginning when you su to root to end. I want you to write it down as you are attempting to edit and save the file and post them here. I can't think of any reason why this file is not being saved.

Boot loader comes up and I pick mandrake

Click Terminal

I am completely dumbfounded:

There's gotta be something missing. You are following all the steps to saving and editing a file w/vi and it's not doing it.

Let's try something new:

Make your editing changes in a gui.

Open a console and su to root and run kwrite or emacs or some other gui editor.

Make the required changes to the file, save, and reboot.

Good Luck.

I wonder what version of MDK you have installed. There was a bug in one release of harddrake (in its perl scripts) in the early MDK 10.0-CE days that reset /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file to driver="nv", no glx every time you rebooted. It was fixed long ago.

BTW, you don't need to change your run level to edit /etc/X11/XF86Config-4, the X server reads this only at startup so you can edit the file while X is running. Changes will not take effect until X is restarted. I presume you are using the graphical login display manager. You might want to disable that and login through a terminal session. Then you can edit and check /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 before starting X (by issuing the startx command). This may give you some clues as to what is really going on.

Finally, sometime the nvidia drive installation scripts have problems creating the correct links for the glx libraries. You can diagnose this by running the ldd command on glx gears. The output should look like the following: if it doesn't then its possible the glx libraries have not been properly installed).

ldd /usr/X11R6/bin/glxgears
       linux-gate.so.1 =>  (0xffffe000)
       libGL.so.1 => /usr/lib/libGL.so.1 (0x4002b000)

How about installing all your updates from Mandrake Update. For the life of me, I can't figure out how come it is not letting you save, unless like what Kjel Oslund says it's some sort of bug.

The other garbage you got when you ran kwrite from console, you don't have to worry about. Any program will spit those messeges when you run from a console, but should still open.

It seems there were some temporary problems with that site you were linked to. It will either resolve itself, or you can also try a different one. Good Luck!

What version of Mandrake are you using? The reason I ask is because you are getting all these messeges concerning signatures which was an issue with previous version of Mandrake, but resolved in Mandrake 10. It's no big deal, just continue installation.
