Questions about IceWM

The problem is that .xinitrc is not read if you start your session from the display manager (KDM, GDM), ie: runlevel 5.

.xinitrc is only read when you start your session from the console, with the startx or xinit command.

Yves.

You are absolutely correct. I don't auto<anything> when going into my Linux space. If I didn't make that clear, I apologize. But as I said, there's more than one way to get something done in Linux.

I start every Linux session in runlevel 3 (Mandrake 8.2). When I'm ready, I do a startx and go into IceWM via .xinitrc. I can also do a KDE3 and get into KDE 3.0.1, because the KDE3 installation process left a "KDE3" alias. I don't remember what convoluted path that takes to get into KDE, and I'm not at my Linux box, but it's not via my ~/.xinitrc.

That's what I like about Linux, it's always interesting :D :D :D !

Sorry, not a clue about your second question. You might find something at icewm.sourceforge.net, or icewm.org. Maybe there's a mailing list or discussion group, or some resource over there. Or maybe you could write a fix in the source code. Good luck to you :D !

For proof that an .xinitrc works with autologin, and to answer my question about xinit being what is used by autologin....
