Qchem
It's been reported that red flag have released a version of their distro entirely compiled with ICC. Recent SPEC benchmarks suggest that ICC code is 10 - 15% faster than GCC. I'd like to see some GNU/Linux benchmarks and stability tests myself. ramfree17
afaik, gcc doesnt claim to be the fastest, only the most standards-compliant. or something like that. it was briefly discussed in the local mailing list but i cant remember much of it now. ciao! Gowator
As well as that you can recomile anything with gcc for free! As I remember ICC isnt cheap... and only optimises for Intel ? The whole idea of linux/FLOSS is you can dload the source and recompile it... how would stuff link if the kernel and some libraries were ICC and others Gcc ?? Also I bet Gcc 3.4 is faster on AMD 64 than ICC! (does ICC even do AMD64) etc etc.
Qchem
ICC should produce code that runs on the AMD64, but it will be without optimisation. ICC (and IFC which I use for my fortran codes) are free for non-commercial use. I also remember reading that icc is binary compatible with gcc so libs theoretically shouldn't pose a big problem (yeah right :P ). Theres been a option in gentoo for a while to compile with icc where possible but I don't think I'll partake, outside of very special situations! It might be OK for individuals but to have the whole distro like this would be locking out a lot of commercial environments in the west (but prob not China)
