this is a pic of kde's screensaver thing, notice the area where it says "Start screensaver automatically" then it has a box on the second line "After 5 min" so this means that after 5 mins of the keyboard or the mouse not being touched, the screensaver will come on...

well here is a snapshot of xscreensaver-demo, which one of these sets the ammount of time of inactivity of the keyboard and mouse before the screensaver comes on?

The "Blank After" option enables your screensaver after x minutes of inactivity

You can add the lock/logout buttons to kicker. Pressing the lock button will blank the screen immediately, and you have to have a password to get back to your desktop.

I think it's rt-click on kicker -> add -> applet -> lock/logout

I use xscreensaver and have for several years.

I have a file in my home directory "~.kde/Autostart/start-xscreensaver.sh". Make sure it is executable , mine is rwxrwxr_x. This file contains one line "xscreensaver -nosplash" (without the quote marks).

Disable the screensaver in kde and you should be in business, it starts with KDE.

I use the run command (Alt-F2) xscreensaver-demo to set preferences.

Much better (imho) than the standard KDE screensavers
