Thanks for our help ianw1974, I have managed to restore KDE but still no joy on the display managers. urpmi kdebase-kdm tells me there is no package named kdebase-kdm and mandriva-kdm-config is already installed. Unfortunately still only XDM is still the only display manager offer to me. Is there somewhere else I can set the display manager?

No not yet, I need to install the nvidia drivers first. Its a low priority at the moment. Is it necessary? When I go here the only option I'm given is XDM. I was using KDE but after I installed some software when I rebooted the GUI came up as IceWM and I can not find a way of restarting in KDE

Hi I have just installed Mandriva 2007. All works well but when I click on logout, shutdown is not an option. Even at the login screen there is no shutdown option just a blue screen with a very simply, boring box with a username and login. There is no where to change the window manager from KDE to ice or whatever. It a minor point but going into a text screen to shutdown is a little beyond most of this household (most of them still think Linux is a bit weird but are willing to use it) any help here would be greatfully received.

Thanks for your reply Ixthusdan. You were right, the modem was not present in the hardware list. I took your advise and set it up again. Under the information window is; "Old device file: /dev//dev/ttyS1" During the Network & Internet Configuration set up the Modem is configured as "CIR|56K External Modem[CL] (/dev/ttyS1)" All these settings are the same as I have in 10.1 Unfortunately the connection is made but its sooooooo sloooooow (see attachment). The Modem I have is Swan 56K V90 External Modem. A hardware report from a windoes program describes it as "Hardware ID SERENUM\CIR3100"

I had a look at previous posts but I can't find anything similar. I have had Mandrake 10.1 installed and running no problem. When I installed Mandriva 2006 I can not make a working connection to the Internet. In Man 10.1 my dial up modem runs at about 5.1-5.4 KB/s, when using 2006 it won't even load things like the goggle home page. When I tried to call up web sites as root I get the message Time out on server. During the network set up there is the option to test your connection which, this tells me that a connection with the net is made. (I had the same problem with 2005LE but decided to simply wait for 2006). Back to using 10.1 for now. Any help would be much appreciated.

Is the mouse connected to a PS2 port or USB? I had a lot of trouble with my Microsoft USB Optical wheel mouse when I had it plugged into the PS2 port, all my problems disappeared when I plugged it directly into a USB port. :D

I forgot to add that I can write to the disk as root no problem.

I am using a 256Mb USB pen drive with Mandrake 10.1. Whenever I plug it in, the permissions are rwxr-wr-w. There is no entry in the fstab until I plug in the drive and then the fstab changes, the following line is added to the end of the file:- /dev/sda1 /mnt/removable auto umask=0022,user,iocharset=iso8859-15,sync,kudzu,codepage=850,noauto,exec,users 0 0 When I remove the drive this line disappears so editing the fstab does not work. I want to change the umask option but I can't figure out where I need to make the change. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. [moved from Installing Mandrake by spinynorman]

To get the "kill cursor" press (at the same time) Ctrl-Alt-Esc and click on the application you want to kill. This does not bring up a list of running programmes though but its great for a window that won't close or whatever.

I have something similar. I have set up a group called "money" that my wife and I have access to but the children don't. I made myself and my wife members of the group and set up a directory with permissions rwxrwx---. This means we can both access the information yet our children cannot access the the directory. This works well for me as we both access the same GnuCash files.

You can add a "Child" panel. Right click on the main panel and go to Add>Panel>Child (or some other type of panel there are several). The child panel can be set up how you want it (size, position, etc) from the KDE>LookNFeel>Panels

Hi Chris I am planning to do a fresh install, I do understand that I don't need to format my home partitions but that is not where the user lists and/or pass words are. I have been running mandrake from 7.2 and each time I do an upgrade I need to re enter everybodies detail (name, password, file owners, groups etc) each time. In the pass I've had problems with the wrong home file being alocated to the wrong person and then having to change the owner of files etc. This information must be in a file somewhere.

I am wanting to update my from 10.0 to 10.1 What files do I need to keep and reuse so that I don't have to re-enter all the existing users and their passwords. There are only six users on this system but they get pissed off with me when I upgrade and they have to all get new pass words.

I have had, for about 6 months, a 32mb pendrive that works fine in m/d 10.0 I then bought a 256mb drive (SanDisk cruzer) and my machine just locks up tight. I tried it in another m/d 10 box and got the same thing. Who knows?

use Settings/Java & Java Script/ Click JaveScript tab, there you can specify under "Open new window" to Allow, Ask (I use this as there are times you want to allow a pop-up), Deny and Smart (don't know what snart does)

I too am having trouble with a sandisk cruzer mini usb flash drive 256mb model SDCZ2-256. I am using M/D 10.0 and have been using a 32mb usb drive for some time now with no problems. Today a got a sandisk cruzer drive, checked it out in win98, no problem, booted up M/D 10.0 and plugged in the drive and my system just locked up tight, I could do nothing, tried restarting the X display (Ctrl-Alt-Backspace), logout (Ctrl-Alt-Del), opening a terminal (Ctrl-Alt-F2), the cursor would not move. It was just like in windows, I had to press the reset button. I tried plugging it in before logging in to my user account, after logging in to my user account, before switching on the computer... but always with the same result, total non response from both the key board and the mouse. If anyone knows of a work around please let me know. Thanks

I was looking for a package recently but only found it as a src.rpm. How am I able to install from src.rpm. I recall seeing some instructions some time ago but I am unable to find them now.

I normally use the rdate command on an irregular bases (I set it to execute "Upon connet" in the root kppp and every now and then I connect as using kppp as root) but I just wondered about the using ntpd, am I missing something?

I tried this. I set my clock out by about a minute then set ntpd and clicked OK. This adjusted my clock for about 5 seconds and then it reverted to its old setting. Is there something else I need to do to make the adjustment stick?
