I updgraded my pc (motherboard, precesor, memory, dvdburner)

i did a fresh install of mandrake 10, but i have no sound at all.

i tried changing the driver, sndconfig, etc. (my soundcard its and on board via ac97) and nothing seems to work.

i had ml92 everything was fine, but with 10, things are diffent.

thanks

i use via vt8233, and mdk work fine since 9.1, 10-CE, and now 10-OE. i don't know what's wrong with your installation, but you can try this:

# modprobe snd-via82xx

or

# service alsa start

if you have installed alsa.

or maybe you can try this command at first:

# alsaconf

of course you have to install alsa things before that.

i did that allready and got this:

Loading driver...

Iniciando ALSA versión 1.0.2c: via82xx via82xx. [ OK ]

Haciendo alsactl para restaurar ajustes del mezclador... [ OK ]

Setting default volumes...

Saving the mixer setup used for this in /etc/asound.state.

/usr/sbin/alsactl: save_state:1061: No soundcards found...

----------------------------------------------------------------------

this is what i at hardrake2:

Fabricante: ‎VIA Technologies

Controladores alternativos: ‎via82cxxx_audio

Bus: ‎PCI

Identificación del bus: ‎1106:3059:1106:4552

Ubicación en el bus: ‎0:11:5

Descripción: ‎VT8233 [AC97 Audio Controller]

Módulo: ‎snd-via82xx

Clase de soporte: ‎MULTIMEDIA_AUDIO

any idea?

thanks

I did that, but it didn't work.

i think its a kernel problem (2.6.3-13mdk), because when i log in using kernel 2.4.25-5mdk i have sound.

i discover that today, `cause i was just using 2.6.3-13.

I`ll update my kernel and i`ll see what happens.

You said that you did fresh install Mdk-10, but in my cd (download edition 10-OE) it only has the 2.6.3-7mdk kernel and the 2.4.25. And it works great in my box. Except for some "choppy" thing when I run Heroes3 game.

You use 2.6.3-13-mdk, where is it came from? Did you update the kernel after the fresh install? With urpmi or something, please let me know.

I have experienced in using 2.6.5 vanilla on Mdk-10-OE and for the first time the alsa service can't restore the volume (error in alsactl), so I have restore it manually after the boot process is finished, and then everything is OK.

I downloaded from an update mirror, but anyway it didn't work (with any 2.6 kernel)

when i use any 2.4 works ok (kind of creepy sometimes)

i want to have sound on kernel 2.6 'cause if i stay at 2.4 i have to do some changes on my system to have everything i use, like k3b (on 2.4 i have to have scsii emulation).

any new idea?

thanks

My sound stopped after I updated the kernel. It is definitely the kernel. But, I know others which have sound. I have tried a new user in kde, and switching between alsa-oss. Nothing makes sound in kde-qt, just python stuff. (pysol)

Hmm OK, but I see from your post that the problem is when restoring volume. Did you ever try to do it "manually"? I forgot the command but with --help option should give you enough info

/usr/sbin/alsactl --help

Have you opened Kmix or ALSA mixer to make sure that sound has not been muted.i.e. turned off ???? this is the cause in most cases of no sound and often the one solution most overlooked because everyone is always too busy looking for complicated answers.

Cheers. John.

I may be confusing everyone! My problem appears to be the same as arriagga. It is not mute, driver choice, or any of the obvious stuff. For me, I had sound with the release kernel, but not after that. And it is just kde, not my entire system. So the driver is workig, just not in kde. Since this is arrigga's thread, I will not post anything else about my issue! :woops:
