xserver.freedesktop.org is a testing ground for future technologies to be incorporated into the X.org server.

You can expect in time to see many improvements to the server, including full transparency and hardware acceleration.

Work on opengl extensions is also in progress but don't hold your breath just yet.

For transparency to be usable hardware acceleration really needs to be incorporated into X.org and luckily this is one of their next primary goals.

Thanks for the info, netstar.

Do you have any info on their shedule ? (Do you think it will be in mdk 10.2 or may be 11 ?)

Opengl extensions are interesting. Will this make it possible to have 3d effect on the windows ?

What about vector graphics ? I thought that a long term goal of desktop environments were to become full vector scalable.

well, maybe a little help is needed,

as I run the script i get this error message about 30 seconds into it:

automake: Makefile.am: warning: automake does not support EXTRA_DIST being defined conditionally
Makefile.am:50: invalid unused variable name: 'nodist_libXdmcp_la_SOURCES'
autoreconf-2.5x: automake failed with exit status: 1

Word to the wise, even though your machine may say that automake is installed it may not be the right version. I checked before starting the script and it said it was installed. Thats why I didnt understand the error. I needed 1.7 according to freedesktop's page. I had 1.4 installed. I would have figured that I was current and had at least 1.8 with running cooker. Guess I should stop assuming, got me in trouble at work once this week.

Ive gotten installed, now what. It seems to not have overwritten my X.org install from urpmi, which is a good thing. How do I get it to start with a window manager on top of it? I have tried with icewm and with KDE. gives this error message with the command :

[jason@localhost jason] sudo /opt/fdo/bin/Xvesa :1 & starticewm -display :1

icewm-session: Can't open display: <none>. X must be running and $DISPLAY set.

With this command I get this error message:

[jason@localhost jason]$ sudo /opt/fdo/bin/Xvesa :1 & startkde -display :1

xset:  unable to open display ""
xsetroot:  unable to open display ''
xmodmap:  unable to open display ''
