MottS
You could run Samba... well I know nothing else so can't help you much on something else.. lol I explained how to setup the thing there: http://www.club-nihil.net/mub/viewtopic.ph...7177&highlight= If you follow what I explained there, you should be able to share your $HOME directory. If you want something more secure then share only the [tmp] directory. Here is how: http://www.mandrakeuser.org/docs/connect/c...mba2.html#share Hope this help a bit MottS
AA
Okay, but I want to share between 2 linux boxes. Isn't SAMBA for sharing linux dir sothat windows machines can access them...!!
chalex20
Okay, but I want to share between 2 linux boxes. Isn't SAMBA for sharing linux dir sothat windows machines can access them...!! There is no problem to use SAMBA to share between two linux boxes. CIFS is mainly for Windows, but not only. Largely, it's just another protocol. And if you want purely UNIX way, configure your boxes as NFS servers. NFS shares are easily mounted into the FS hierarchy tree.

Try reading the manpages for "nfs" and "exports" man nfs man exports They describe all the options and have some good examples for mounting NFS shares. johnnyv
I assume you are using 9.0? open "mandrake control center" -> mount points -> partition sharing allow filesharing easiest but least secure is to allow all users. once done you can right click on a folder in konquerer and share it. share it by nfs, the other computer on the lan should be able to access it now by going into the control center -> mount points -> nfs mount points . scan the network any the share should be detected you can then chose to mount it, and write it to fstab if you want it permanently availible. you can repeat this process on the other computer so both boxes are sharing directories. AA
enabled the sharing but i cannot get a dir in my home dir to share. I select share and then click ok. If I search for servers it does not shoe up. If I click sharing on that dir again it is not shared.... why is this...?
AA
Found that if I create an NFS export with webmin then that nfs share is mountable by the other system and then the file copying can comence. But thanx for the avice johhnyv

AA
When I right click and say "share directory" and then OK, if I look again, the directory is not shared. It is also a directory in my home directory.
Guest makra
hi there I found an old post via search and tryed to follow the instructions: use rpmdrake and install: >Samba-client-2.2.6-1.0.pre2.2mdk >Samba-common-2.2.6-1.0.pre2.2mdk >Samba-server-2.2.6-1.0.pre2.2mdk I made: console --> rpmdrake --> search for: samba. Wanted to install samba-server 2.2.7-2.1.mdk System wanted to remove samba-client. I did cancel, cos I didn't want to destroy the client network acess. Does the system keeps config and reinstall the removed packets after ? makra
MottS
You are probably referring to this post: http://www.club-nihil.net/mub/viewtopic.ph...7177&highlight= If you were able to choose samba-server 2.2.7-2.1.mdk, you were probably able to choose the client too no? And yes, the config files (/etc/samba/smb.conf) are kept when you remove a package --> I would backup tho .. ;-) MOttS
Guest makra
Hi MottS You are probably referring to this post: http://www.club-nihil.net/mub/viewtopic.ph...7177&highlight= Yes, This list my mail is referring to. ]If you were able to choose samba-server 2.2.7-2.1.mdk, you were probably able to choose the client too no? And yes, the config files (/etc/samba/smb.conf) are kept when you remove a package --> I would backup tho .. ;-) MOttS I will just try to install samba and make a backup before. I try to trust rpm that it is reinstalling samba client after removal again... Of course I make a backup of my /home before. Is this a good idea ? If no, I could have to make my mdk install new. So, bye and thank you for all the fish :-) makra
Guest makra
Hi, I have followed the instructions to install samba-server. samba client and samba common are seeming to be already installed. > Search for 'drakwizard-0.2-13mdk' and install it. This wizard I cannot find. If it is already installed, it makes no effect. > Now close 'rpmdrake' and open the Mandrake Control Center (MCC). On the left side there is > an icon named 'Configuration Server'. Clic on it and clic the 'Samba' icon that will appears on > the right side. A Wizard will show up and ask you a couples of simple questions. Here is what > you have to do for each windows (there is 6 windows). I was not able to do so, cos the button "configuration server" does not appear. After a while of looking, it appears that the drakewizard is not installed on my computer. And it is not in the packet list given by rpm. It's a pitty... so what to do ? I could have to edit the samba.conf with vi... this seems easier than to do things they are not working, cos they are not there. I want a configuration, where other computers of the LAN can acces to /home/user/. This config is to share files with the other users of the LAN What are the nescescary settings in /etc/samba/smb.conf ? grmpf. makra
