web browsing with Mozilla

I do everything over the web - everything financial at least. I send money to my investments, check up on my investments, etc etc.

 

I am using Mozilla Firefox currently. I notice that some sites - the one that comes to mind is janus.com - don't work at all. In fact, Janus.com immediately says something like "You are using Netscape greater than 4.7. this site will not work correctly for you".

 

And that turns out to be true. None of the click selections work or anything. It is extremely frustrating. It works great with IE.

 

How can I ever change over to 100% linux if all this little s**t keeps happening.

I'm a bit surprised it doesn't work. After all, most banks do the trouble to test AT LEAST for Internet Explorer and Netscape, which is the same codebase (I am not wrong here, am I?)

 

My guess is that alot of these site are developed for/tested with IE only. Quite some bone-heads seem to do that in this time (sorry, webmaster rant...)!

 

As a sort of stop-gap, you *could* still run Internet Explorer from within Linux with Crossover Office. Pick up the demo from their site and give it a spin. If you happen to have a CD of office2000 lying around, that'll work great; if you install office IE 5 will get installed automatically too.

 

But yeah, I know it's a bummer.

This isn't Linux's fault, nor yours, nor Mozilla. It's the stupid, shitty websites who think everyone uses Internet Explorer and tailors their web site for that and ONLY that.

 

Web sites shouldn't use stupid stuff that only works on IE. It's ridiculous. If you can, try moving business elsewhere, or boot into Windows. It's really bad business to lock out customers who aren't chained to Microsoft like they are.

I installed what iphitus said, and I set myself to IE 6, and went to janus.com.

 

Janus.com did not display the message that said "You are using Netscape greater than 4.7 blah blah..." ok, so far so good. But unfortunately the website still does not work at all.

 

Guess I'll email the webmaster and complain. Lotta good that'll do.

I emailed and complained to janus.com about the above problem (over a week ago - no answer yet).

 

Anyway, I tried with Konq, after setting janus.com to an IE 5.5 alias in Konq Configuartion - site worked properly after that...

 

However, many other sites (mostly secure financial sites) don't even display at all while browsing with konq. What a hassle just to do stuff over the web.

 

Guess I can use Firefox for 99% of my browsing, and just use Konq when I need to do stuff at janus.com.

It doesn't work with Mozilla Firefox ?? did you try with the normal Mozilla ?

Anyway, let Mozilla or Konq identify itself as IE only when no choice, but after, you should not forget to switch back to the normal identification because there are statistics that are made using this identification and if the statistics say that 99.99% of the browsers are IE even if you don't use it, things are going to be even worse.

 

P.S: I've tried janus.com with the Mozilla 1.3.1 for Windows. It displays the warning message but if I continue, it seems it works properly. ok I've only tried few things, it's probable that you use some more advanced features that I've didn't tried.

So far every site has worked properly with Firefox (except janus.com). Yes, I tried janus.com with firefox, firebird, netscape (all 3 on my win2k box) and also normal mozilla 1.5 on my red hat machine - none worked.

 

With Firefox on my win2k box, I get the warning message on janus.com, but I click on Individual Investor anyway. On the next screen, when you put your mouse over - for example - Janus Funds - it should expand into many selections, which you click on the one you want. With firefox, however, the mouseover does not expand the selection - nothing works or is clickable on that screen.

 

With konq set to IE (for janus.com only) it works properly. you don't have to return to normal with konq - I just have janus.com set for IE identity - all other sites will be the normal identity.

 

I don't get why, with konq set to IE it works great on janus.com, but with konq normal - doesn't work at all. I mean, its the SAME browser either way. I emailed janus and said their site was the ONLY site I've been to that didn't work with my Mozilla browser and that I didn't appreciate it, not to mention other comments like being in bed with MS

What exactly doesn't work on janus.com? I've just browsed it with firefox and everything seems ok. Of course - this is just me randomly clicking links, so my experience of the site is fairly shallow...

Don't forget I am talking about Firefox on windoze machines, not linux - maybe that makes a diff... ?

 

Anyway, when using Firefox for windoze, go to janus.com. You are greeted with a warning about using Netscape greater than 4 or something, and that the site won't work right. Proceed to janus.com anyway, and click on Individual Investors. So far that works ok.

 

On the Individual Investors screen, there are 3 tabs - when you mouse over any of these tabs, they expand into many choices you can click. However, you can't click on anything because as soon as you move your mouse down the list, the list immediately dissapears.

If you follow the links in explorer, jot them down and bookmark them, I suspect you can visit them just fine. E.g.

 

https://ww3.janus.com/Janus/Retail/Logon?De...rackAndTransact

 

the part after 'DestinationServlet=' will probably the location/url.

 

You could ask them also to make an intermediate page, e.g. when you click on any of the 'Janus' tabs, you get a page with a (bulleted) list of possible links/destinations.

 

Just a few quick thoughts

 

I do wonder what all those name are doing hard-coded in that script!?
