Guest ndeb
AA, 1. If u r using XFree86-4.x.y, ur settings file is /etc/X11/XF86Config-4. The file /etc/X11/XF86Config is for XFree86-3.x.y (which u don't have) so making changes there is useless (I deleted that file from my system). 2. To have a large resolution, u must have large enough refresh rates. In the monitor section of the above file, u should have ranges like: HorizSync 30-70 VertRefresh 50-90 3. Run the command xvidtune and get the modeline that gives u the best refresh rate at a given resolution. U can add that modeline in ur monitor section. BTW, XFree86 only allows u to change the resolution size on the fly, never the color depth. XFree86-4.3.0 is yet to come out
