raysr
This is what I get on a newly installed MDK 9.2 OS. Kppp comes up fine but can't find the modem. I have searched all the threads (and there are many) but I haven't found a solution. I typed kppp in a console and got this- Xlib:extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0". The device I'm using is /dev/ttyS1. I've tried all the others and this one gets me further than the others. I've got everything else ready to go, can someone please help me on this? US Robotics 56K internal.
spiedra
Sounds like to me this could be a winmodem. One site to check would be www.linmodems.org. They may have some drivers you can download to get your modem to work, but you'll have to know what chipset it is to make sure you have the right driver. If yo don't know, there is a tool you can download from there that will help dentify what chipset it is, then you can go about searching for a driver. raysr
I hope I don't have to download anything as this is a MDK only OS. Thanks.
spiedra
If it is indeed a winmodem, you'll need drivers since winmodems are controlled by software. With serial modems and other hardware controlled modems, you don't need to worry about drivers. I actually didn't think US Robotics Internal modems were winmodems until I searched for it on google and linmodems.org and found that a lot of them are winmodems. Do you not have windows installed on a different partition? One method would be to install the driver from windows and you can access it from Linux, or download the driver from another PC and burn it to a disc. scoopy
Xlib:extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0". That message has nothing to do with what your working on. Has to do with video acceleration and video drivers. Nothing to be too concerned over. (just thought I pass that along)
raysr
"Wizzard" says it's not a "winmodem". I had many issues with this which I have corrected. No "/etc/resolv.conf" file being one. I created that, and it's being written to. I must be close to a fix because kppp is locking up now. Still says "Looking for Modem". I have an old computer that had '98 on it so I thought I'd put a dedicated MDK OS on it for fun, it hasn't been. My other OS is MDK-XP w/ Mozilla 1.6 and Opera 7.23 and 7.5. Anyway, I am stuck with it now. Thanks for the replies.
Ixthusdan
I think 9.2 had some bug fixes for kppp, and other things. Check it out.
spiedra
To clarify what Ixthusdan said. Go to Mandrake Update and see if there is a bug fix for kppp. I remember a couple of releases ago, unchecking "lock file" in kppp set up did the trick as well. Or alternatively try wvdial. I really can't think what is to try if it is not a winmodem.
